What is the brass hexagonal sensor (if that is indeed what it is) above the front trailing plug, tapped into the housing? I'm tracking an oil leak from it or somewhere above it (and there is not much above it that would leak oil...)

IIRC, thats the knock sensor. It can leak some dark sticky goo if its gone bad, but shouldn't be the source of an oil leak.

Check the oil filler spout and the filter pedastal for leaks from above.

I thought knock sensor was on the rear housing. And leaks from the oil filler spout or filter pedestal would be well downstream of this.

Edit: from looking at parts diagram, this certainly could be the knock sensor. It is hard to see on the car, and I was confused because it does not appear to have an electrical lead, but rather an oil line or something...

 

The housings each have a place for the knock sensor, but it typically installed on the front housing. I know you have the PFS ECU, and typically the PFS unit is so sensitive to the knock reading that those users relocated the sensor to the rear housing.

 

/\ really i would think the rear would be louder??? or is it the chain in the front cover that is noiser..

I'm not sure exactly why the rear seems quieter. I just know it's been an easy solution for the EFI users to stop inappropiate fuel cut from the knock reading.

there is an oil supply line that goes to the turbos, that has a banjo fitting right above that knock sensor. you might want to look at that banjo fitting

 

OK, it is definitely leaking "some dark sticky goo". That is an indication that it is indeed bad and needs replacement?

I assume these are not tapped into the housing, but rather just onto the housing. In other words, nothing from inside the housing could possibly be leaking from there, right?

So who has purchased one of these? Dare I ask how much?

Ray at Malloy tells me not to worry; the sensor will throw a code when it is shot. "His has leaked for years".

You gotta respect Ray for telling me that when I had my credit card ready for his $176.56 part.

 

ray is a great guy, but on another note, could somone explain to me exactly where the coolant level sensor is thats on the drivers side of the engine and what it looks like. i have had the wire for it grounded since i put in the new engine and would like to finally hook up the sensor.

lookl for a loose single spade connector. black iirc. right around the rear of the ps pump

 

It goes onto a 12mm or 14mm bolt with a spade connector right below the oil filter a little to the left.

 

Yes, when the sensor is completely shot, it will throw a code. However, if the "insulating goo" is leaking, you will get higher than normal readings since more of the engine vibrations are being transfered to the sensor. Depending on the ECU being used, it can be enough to cause a high knock reading and retard the car slightly (on ECU's that actually do something with the knock sensor reading.. the PFC doesn't do anything).
