Or maybe it's just Jimlab's way of saying "time moves on, and the FD isn't the pinnacle of sports car performance any more". If it ever was in the first place.

"Fun to drive" is awfully hard to quantify and depends primarily on the individual. 0-60, 60-0, quarter mile, slalom speed, and skidpad g-force, on the other hand, are not and do not, and the Supra had no trouble delivering in any category.

Unless you're planning on spending a lot of time autocrossing, the smart money says the Supra is the better bang for the buck and far more reliable than the FD. If they're higher priced, there's a good reason. The two cars didn't start out that far apart, contrary to what most people think.

I'm tired of people saying that the rotary engine is fragile. If you start modding any car and you make one mistake its over. Go on suprastore.com, every supra forsale has had their engine rebuilt. Even locally here 90% of the supras had their engines rebuilt.

Yup, a d/fw guy had a highly modded Supra and he went through at least 3 engines. Same thing with the domestic guys I know, those V8s are not indestructible, contrary to popular opinion. Having said that, the margin for error on a supra or mustang/firebird/whatever is definitely much larger than for an FD. Bottom line, if you want Porsche TT performance at a Mazda price, you have to pay somehow.

I'm beginning to think they should change the name of this forum to RX-7 Babies.com.

Not always. There are many engines that are far more resilient than the rotary.

Go on suprastore.com, every supra forsale has had their engine rebuilt. Even locally here 90% of the supras had their engines rebuilt.
Mark Tozer (Supra store owner) is the king of grenaded 2JZ-GTEs, and while there is a conspiracy in the Supra community to hush it all up, the engines that are blown are the big RWHP single turbo type that were pushed too far in the quest to be dyno queen of the month.

A stock or BPU Supra is as reliable a sports car as you'll find. Slightly modded and even stock FDs, on the other hand, are often on their second engine. Or third...

No other car forum I've ever been on has the concept of "reliability mods".

100,000 miles on an FD's original engine is cause for nation-wide celebration. When a Supra or yet another LT1- or LS1-powered Camaro, Firebird, or Corvette passes 100,000 miles on the original engine, it just means it's time to check the oil again.

Shall I go on? The truth hurts, doesn't it.

I have 140,000 miles on my chassis! Second motor. WOOHOO!!!!

Get a Subaru WRX STi. That's what I would get if I didn't have my RX-7.

Any time you ask an engine to produce 2-3 times the rated horsepower without increasing displacement and/or upgrading internals, you're asking for trouble.

Same thing with the domestic guys I know, those V8s are not indestructible, contrary to popular opinion.
True, but more V8 sports cars pass 100,000 miles on the original engine each year than the entire world-wide production run of FDs.

no. the name makes perfect sense rx7CLUB.com. The word club can be defined as the social gathering of a group of people that share similar interests. Since that is in fact the name, what are you doing here? It is consistant that you show up in these sort of threads bashing the rotary engine....what is the point? What is your purpose in doing this? Bottom line is that you are a TROLL.

To answer the question....i would get the rx7. I love the fact that it loves to rev to 8000rpms and the feed back that the car provides. It just feels so racey! As far as reliability is concerned my car makes 340 rwhp @ 14psi. I take it to the strip and track and i have had zero reliability problems.

JIMLAB yes the supra and the v8's do last longer. Yes the cars run longer but most of them burn oil at that stage in their lives. Now do we want to say they are more reliable because they are still running even though they are burning oil like a ******, the compression is down on three of the cylinders. **** you can run a rx7 on a blown motor if you want.

Now to answer the main question I would buy a supra. I wanted one originally. When I was looking I found one with 35000km for $35 000 CDN (ex-girlfriends brothers car) black on black, completely stock 6 speed. Before I could buy the car the movie The Fast and The Furious came out and the supra prices went up through the roof. Thats when I bought my fd and don't regret it at all.
You have to decide want you want the car for; drag racing, track, auto cross etc. How much power do you want. Both cars are excellent but the supra will cost more in the begining. Most supra guys love the looks of the fd but love the power of a supra. Same goes for the fd guy's. Thats why one company (sp engineering?) put a supra engine in a fd.

I agree.

While our rotary engines do tend to be fragile, simply purchasing a Supra is not a one way ticket to large hp along with reliability...thats a more difficult road than some people make it seem. Its still a performance car after all, and it will have just as many problems as any other used car, especially considering the fact that the prior owner may have "driven"/beaten on it just as many FD owners do. I highly doubt you will drive either to the edge of its ability to clearly say one is better than the other, but I'd take adam c's advice, and attempt to drive them both to see wich fits you best.

I've owned V8 muscle cars, an FC, several four cylinder turbocharged rice rockets (including a 300hp Volvo 240 Group A car), and a souped up six cylinder BMW.

Currently I have a Miata and an FD. And what is the favorite car I've ever had? The Miata.

Do I like the FD? Yes, a lot, but mostly for the track days. I love the looks, I like that it is LIGHT WEIGHT, something that the dyno queens often forget about, and I like how it performs. Plus, I just plain like the fact that my engine is a rotary. I've done the whole pushrod V8 and turbo four cylinder thing and so has everyones uncle. Sure the rotary may blow up on me someday but I've had 50k miles of fun and many track days on this engine (140K chassis) so far with no problem and most importantly... I've really enjoyed it.

Really? A troll typically isn't an original owner of the pinnacle car the forum is dedicated to, nor does a troll typically produce more innovations and parts for that car than many vendors. Maybe you should have just called me a hater or something equally intelligent.

That's one of the dumbest thing I've read in awhile. Par for the course for one of your posts, though.

For how many miles? Let me know when you have to replace your engine.

here comes the personal attacks....so typical. Please tell me what i said about MY feelings are dumb....

Jim just cause u bought the car in 93 doesnty mean **** . Yes you offer some insightful stuff but you also constantly say negative things and put others down. To me thats a troll. As i have asked in the past and ask now, what is the point of all this? Why to you hang around rotary enthuasists if you dislike the engine. Only a person looking to be negative and looking for attention would do this sort of thing. There is something wrong here. The sooner you figure this out the sooner you will finally be a happy person b/c i bet this sort of behavior isnt something that only manifests itself on a message board on the internet but in every aspect of your life. It is just the type of person you are....a jerk.

Jesus Jim,

I think it's time for you to sell your car and leave the RX7 forum. You never have anything good to say about this car anymore. Sure, its about as reliable as a woman, but its still a 7. You used to love the car just like the rest of us, what happened?

Using the word "racey", as if it were a quantifiable measurement of FD superiority, and the implication that piston engines can't rev to 8,000 rpm, which is obviously not the case.

Yes you offer some insightful stuff but you also constantly say negative things
The truth is often perceived as negative by those who would rather believe something else.

and put others down
Only the deserving.

To me thats a troll.
Yes, but we've alreay established that you aren't very intelligent. It's not much more work to establish that therefore your opinion means absolutely nothing.

Why to you hang around rotary enthuasists if you dislike the engine.
Because I still own the car, and for many people, the car is not defined by its engine.

Only a person looking to be negative and looking for attention would do this sort of thing.
Then what are you looking for by responding to my posts? A merit badge? It works both ways. You could just put me on your ignore list, yet you haven't. What are you trying to prove?

There is something wrong here. The sooner you figure this out the sooner you will finally be a happy person
How do you know that kicking the legs out from under the less intelligent members of this fourm (yourself included) doesn't give me satisfaction? Don't kid yourself. I have a great time having fun at your expense.

b/c i bet this sort of behavior isnt something that only manifests itself on a message board on the internet but in every aspect of your life.
OK, Buddha. What will I be in my next incarnation?

Apparently, being a jerk pays off. I'd be interested to hear how well your personality is paying off.
