The Mysterious Brake Clunk - Need council

Ok, this sounds like a problem that no one is for sure on...

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ht=brake+clunk

My brakes clunk, sounding like a rap on the caliper with a hammer. It only happens at low speeds, just before the car comes to a stop. I have been all over the car looking for something loose and to no avail.

There is no real noticeable unclunk, but it will do it repeatedly if I wait a few seconds between hitting the brakes. It never does it at high speeds. I can hit the brakes hard at 60 and the car will slow to less than 10 mph and then clank..sounds like metal on metal...It never did it before and I changed the front pads. It started doing it right afterwards. The brakes work fine. I have bled them..If I pump them, they get slightly stiffer with one pump, but I don't think there is air in the lines. There are no brake mods either... all stock...

I almost am ready to mount a video cam under the car and go for a drive... This is crazy and it drives me nuts hearing that clank....

The pins that the front pads slide on should be smoothed and lubricated with a high-temp grease. If the pads bind up on those pins, you could have some noise.

I don't think so from your description, but it's not rear pillow ball clunk, right?

I had a set of Hawk HP+ in the rear once and the backing plates were a tad too small. This left the pads slightly loose in the caliper since they could twist a little. No problem except at parking lot speeds I could hear the pads rattle back and forth as I got on and off the brake pedal. It drove my nuts.

Check the pads in the caliper and be certain they fit correctly. The ears on the rear brake pads should snap firmly into the caliper and the fronts should slip snugly in as well. Also be certain all the springs are in place.

Check the slider pins for the rear calipers as well. These are the pins the entire caliper floats on. Remove them, clean them and their bores with carb cleaner then add a thin film of brake grease and reassemble. The grease gets old, dries out and then gets hard from brake heat. This makes the caliper bind.

Oooo, that is good info.... It sort of sounds like something is binding and then as if the pad slams into the rotor (although braking is smooth) - which makes this metal clank

These are definately happening on the front rotors - both sides

The rods that pass through the caliper and hold the pads in place are a bit rusty. Certainly not real clean and smooth...The old pads were probably worn in enough and that is why they didn't do this...

I will get under there and do some clean up later on tonight and see if it makes a difference ... Great suggestion...
