Thumbs down My turbo rebuild failure

My secondary turbo started leaking badly so I decided to buy two Turbo City rebuild kits and rebuild both turbos while they were out. Well I successfully rebuilt the secondary and put it back together. I was just about finished with the primary and was putting on the last part of it - the compressor nut when this happened: the shaft broke when I was torquing the nut down to 17.5 lbs.

If anyone has an extra turbo, blown or not, or just the shaft and wheels, please tell me so I can buy it from you. I NEED to have this fixed in a week.

I just called there and they don't have any. Then I called Rotary Power and they want 300$ for ONE core turbo.

Damn that sucks! sry to hear it. I'm sure you tried recycler, ebay, and the f/s section on this forum. You can prob find some blown turbo you can buy for 100 or less. also you can do a search on the f/s section to see if anyone was selling and pm them to see if they still have it.

good luck.

oh and and for that jb weld remark, i REALLY hope you were kidding. there is no need to spend that much! epoxy should work just fine. ;-)

Well I just found a set of blown turbos for 110 shipped. I hope I get them in a few days so I can have my car back together ASAP.

By the way, despite what unfortunately happened with the shaft, the turbo rebuild was as easy as installing an intake. I suggest that everyone who has blown turbos rebuild them yourselves!

The problem I have always heard is not with the rebuild itself, but with the fact that the rebuilds never last long.

Are you sure that the torque on that nut is 17.5 ft-lb? Damn, that seems way too high for how small the fastener is. Shitty that it broke, too.

Take the parts to a Machine Shop. I'm sure they can weld them together, then grind and smooth out, then balance the shaft/wheel. Probably for less than 30 bucks.

I get all my turbo stuff from Robert at Forced Performance-www.forcedperformance.com .. When I rebuilt the twins on my last FD, he had "reconditioned" (cleaned and balanced basically) turbine shafts pretty cheap. Don't know if he still has any or not, but if he does, the price was right from what I remember.

Don't weld the part with TIG, MIG or JB for crying out loud. That thing spins at an incredible rate. There is no way it can be balanced with that sort of repair. This one piece of RX-7 probably belongs more on an F-16 than in a car. You know what the air force would do with it. You'll cause more damage to your peace of mind than you'll save in dollars and cents even if it would hold together for an hour or two.

turbos

Let me know if you run into probs with the blown set... I have a couple of turbo center sections that I can let go for 25 bucks each...however the exhaust turbine has some damage on the wheel from heat.... shaft is good.

I have another set of turbos that have just been fully rebuilt with turbo city rebuild kits.... ready to run, no play in the shafts, still a small amount of smoke on start up but the boost nice to 15 PSI no prob and run clean after warm up. Asking 300.00 plus shipping.

Let me know. I can ship out tomorrow night if you need.

Good luck.

every time I read posts about rebuilding turbos yourself there is always 1 keys isue missing (in my opinion)

I rebuild my turbos myself to. This consist of putting new copper bearings in, new oilrings, trust bearing? (if in the kit), sealings and other small stuff.

Basically what you NOT renew is the prpallor shaft. WHY? Well, that's the most expensive part of the lot. Do not forget that the shaft wears out too.

Turbos HAVE to be balanced again after any rebuild. No wonder so many turbos fail after home made rebuilds... for that matter, even after professional rebuilds....
