Is my transmission/gearbox gone??

Today while driving to pick up my g/f after helping a fellow 7 owner install his RB catback..my tach completely goes dead. Im like..wtf..figured I'd take a look once I get home after picking the g/f up. Then I smell something burning, so I pull over immediatly.

Upon inspection under the car, right below the shifter there is some kinda of liqiud getting burnt up on the exhaust. The liquid was dripping on the ground, and is clear. My first thought's is that its gotta be the gearbox or the tranny itself. If I remember correctly the tranny was supposed to be rebuilt.

Does this sound right to you guys?? What could be wrong? Bad seals? Bad tranny/gearbox?? I dunno..luckily I was 10 minutes from a family mechanics shop and I didnt have to drive TOO far. Thanks guys. BTW I DID SEARCH "bad transmission" but a lot of thread pertaining to swapping, and bad syncro's. Thanks.

I suppose I'd look at your speedometer sensor, or anything at the tranny. If it leaks and drips oil on the exhaust that could cause your problem. Don't drive it until you solve the problem and it's not leaking oil.

Only buy a used speedo sensor. The new ones are expen$ive.

It would make sense that the speedo sensor would be somewhere near the back of the tranny because it would be reading off the output shaft.

I was told that it orginates off the Crank angle sensors, which would make the tach and this tranny problem seperate..just a coincedence.

The speedo sensor is on the passenger side of the extension housing of the transmission. All you need to know about it is in the factory service manual, which you can download

If you want to keep guessing, I suppose you can do that too.

the tach signal originates off the CAS...because they tell the coils when to fire. RPM is read from the leading coil.

these are separate issues

Sorry to hear about your problem. The speed sensor is on the back half of the tranny on the passenger side. There is only one bolt that holds it on. There is a o-ring seal on the sensor, so you could check that. It is rather close to the gear shifter location also.

I must have read this wrong but he said "TACH." so why would he be looking at the tranny. The speed sensor for th mph is located on the passenger side of the tranny and if you jack the car up high enough with enough tilt may be able to remove it without losing any fluid (but this won't do anything for the "TACH".
