You havent worked on some of the FDs I have. I'd rather sort out an FC than a busted FD anyday. Used replacement parts are a TON cheaper for the t2. You can build a 350rwhp FD (including the cost of the car) for about 10 grand; you can build the same FC for about half that, with both of them being in roughly equivalent condition.

yes a fd can make for a good DD. mines as around 300-320RWHP and is fine! if you have the money go for it,BUT since your still in collage if you have the slightest doubt in the back of your mind about classes and the price of owning one DONT GET IT!! school is way more important than the car. it sucks but if you get it when your out youll enjoy it much more.

You could also see how much money you will have left over after selling the impreza to buy the FD. If you have enough money left over to spend around 2-3 grand in reliability mods and maybe have another couple thousand around in an account as an emergency account to help pay for any repairs the car might need than you shouldn't have any issues. Also make sure you get the car checked out before purchasing it. As someone said earlier having only 17k miles on a car that old isn't always the best for them.

I've owned a RX7 and used it as a DD when I was 17 till when I was 20. It was a nightmare. I actually bought the car because I wanted something fast and reliable. I had no idea what I was getting in to.

After 2 engines and 40k miles (I bought the car with 22kmiles on it in 1998) I put the car in the garage with a dead engine. After sitting in my garage for 5 years I am back in a situation to where I can drive it again. So instead of putting another rotary in it and going through that massive amount of bs again, I am going to LS1 conversion route.

IMO if your not in a financial situation where you can dump massive amounts of cash at the drop of a hat to keep it on the road as a DD, don't f'n do it. Your GF ASIDE, think about the bs your going to be going through when you need to get you and your gf somewhere and it dies. Because it will. Especially one with 17,900 miles. Sure every part on the car EXCEPT the engine will be fantastic I am sure. The engine is going to fail if you try to DD that 18k mile car.

I would even put a money bet on it. 6 months/ 15k miles of daily driving and your looking at a new engine. Also it probably won't send you 3 warning letters in the mail notifying you of it's impending doom. The car is going to break on the way to a wedding or some shiz. Murphy's law.

Buy a 7 with a rotary as a backup/fun car. If you have cash dump a lsx engine into it. Either way it won't really matter the car is so f'ing pretty you will prolly buy it anyway.

its all about the starting point. if people spend time looking for a good unmolested car and are willing to pay top dollar for it than their overall enjoyment level will be so much higher in the end.

+1 on the daily driver. in my opinion a fd isnt a car u want to drive everyday. but to me thats what keeps it fun. i drive my fd in the summer only and on the weekends only. i look forward to it.

Thats true and thats what people should know right away. If you're gonna buy a 10k FD, you'll know sooner than later you're gonna be fixing something, minor or major. For the person who spends 18,19, 20k on a prinstine FD, then all you have to do is enjoy and take care of it.

I choose not to DD mine, not cause i cant. I feel like what you said, if i DD everyday, i might feel bored with it. For the days im not driving it just builds excitment for the day i go take it out.

Plus i like having that "o **** that red rx7 is driving around" type of feeling when i take my car out. If i take my car out everyday, people will be like o i just saw that car yesterday, no biggie. But if i take it out once or twice a week, people will feel excited cause they saw it, which is not so often lol. Idk, thats how i feel.

You could be asking the same questions about your girl friend! Is see reliable? Will see let you down when you most need her? Does she have to many miles on her? When she breaks down were do you get her fixed? How much for boltons, how will they hold up? Does she start up easy in the morning? Can i afford to keep her up$? Ill tell you from experience the resale sucks!! IMO. if your not through college you probley dont need either! Just joking around i love my 1.3 fd, and im to old for girlfriend!

If it was maintained, then it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

17k miles is 10x better than 170k miles. It's not a get-out-of-maintenance free card, but it's a hell of a lot better.

I DD drive my FD, but only during 'the season.' It is almost stock and I have never had 'major' problems with it, that said, I have still spent more on it than I have my Rodeo that I drive mostly when not in the FD.

But I would never have this car if it was my only transportation and I absolutely needed it every day for every reason.

I don't think it is 'that kind of car.'

Reliable is one thing. Practical is another. Can it be reliable for a DD? Sure. Will it ever be practical? No.

First, this is not the kind of car you really debate over getting. You either want it and you just "get it", or you don't. People who usually have to debate whether or not the car is for them, generally don't end up owning one long if they do get one. Its not an easy ownership. Its like a marriage but its much easier to get a divorce and forget about it though.

If you want a sporty and fast DD, look at an E36 M3. You'll have about the best of all worlds from a DD standpoint: they look great, good reliability, quick, handles great, room to do things like shopping, interior comforts, and the list goes on. And in the end, you'll most likely end up with more money to shower that GF with than if you gamble and purchase a RX-7.

My opinion... stay with the Suby through college, get a good job, then find an FD... like my pops always said " like that one, theres a million more!" (works for the girlfriend too!)...good luck...
