MY FD got totaled

So on thursday night I was driving on a little back road near where I live. Its a real slow (25 mph), two lane road with tons of twisties on it. I was following a suburban traveling up this road, we were comming up on a left hand turn. Right as I was about to enter the turn, a ford focus came sliding around the corner. He was doing 80+. He almost hit the suv in front of me, I had just enough time to swerve right off the road onto the gravel shoulder. The focus came 3/4ths into my lane and hit my drivers side rear quarter panel. After he hit me, he kept sliding down the road still out of control, and 200ft down hit a telephone pole and took it out clean.

So pretty much my FD is defintly not gonna be fixed. Whole drivers side is crushed, and when you open the drivers door, the sill is creased real bad. I was very suprised how well the car took the impact actually. Considering we got hit by a car doing 80mph. My girlfriend and I are both alright. Just have some sore necks and backs. The drivers side rear rim shattered on impact to give an idea about the amount of force.

The other driver was in a rental car...He was 19...He apparently stole the car from his driveway without his dad knowing. He was taking the car out joyriding with his little brother. Both of them were not badly injured either. Just some bruises, scrapes, and im sure theyre sore as hell.

So now im just waiting to hear from my insurance company. Im going to get paid out, then buy the car back. Everything is still alright in it besides that side. Just gonna buy another FD, gonna be single turbo this time around, and ill just drop my motor in cause its so fresh.

Well heres some pictures...

You should be thinking about a simple formula following this accident:

Pain + Suffering = $$$$

Surprised nothing like this happen on Friday (Fast and Furious 3 opening)

I'm glad you and your girlfriend are okay, sorry to hear and see what happened to the car though. My 8 got totalled which sucked, but insurance took care of it and now I'm pretty happy with my FD.

Good luck with everything!

Sorry to hear about the accident. You are ok, and that's the most important part.

OT: This is a good example of why I gringe when I read/hear people talking about "taking the car to the twisties". While it's a lot of fun, it's not difficult to loose control and injure people (like Cgotto6) who are just driving down the road. Use tracks, that's what they are there for....

I highly doubt that! To replace the rear quater panel, door skin, and paint the back half of the car is ~$3,500.00 from personal experience. Looks to be quite a bit more detailed than just simply replacing the items listed. I'd say it's $4,000.00-$5,000.00 worth of damage.

Anywho, sorry about the whole situation! I'd die if this happened to me! Atleast no one was injured!

I wouldn't say it's "totaled" but I would say it's a lot of money to fix too. Since both cars were in motion there probably was not a lot of seriously hard physics occuring but more so major outside body panel damage. But if you want to total it out, it's your decision, of course.

This is why we have to pay so much damn money for insurance!!
R1's are not so easy to find and this one can be fixed. Hope you and your friend are o.k. If you and your friend are having problems that need to be attended to by a doctor, then make your claim. Don't do it 'cause you have a reason to scam money from the insurance company.

Good luck on replacing your car for the money the insurance company will give you. I'm not counseling fraud. Both our victims in this case report pain. He shouldn't short his claim. The injuries should be reported as such and compensation should be sought. If he does that, he may be able to afford a decent replacement instead of taking a second financial "hit."

Even if a body shop can bend that car back into shape a major structural member has been bent. In my opinion, that car will never be as strong as it was before the accident even if it looks okay.

Yah, if it bent any major structural members, the insurance company will total it no questions asked. Sue the pants off that guy, his insurance will cover it and you're all set. True this is why we pay out the *** for insurance, but then again those prices aren't going to drop, may as well get the benefit of it.

Sorry about the car, hopefully you had good coverage with your insurance company, I can't get over people that don't fully insure their 7, just seems like a bad idea.

Oh dear lord no. Sorry about your ride dude. Glad to hear of course you're ok. Whenever dealing with high speeds and a few thousand pounds of metal and what-not on four wheels, life can seem very short very fast.

The car is definetly not salvageable. If you look at it from the back end, the rear is pointing a different direction. There is a few large creases in the door sill, which is one of the main structural parts of the car. The rear suspension is all tweaked, the rear subframe is creased on the drivers side...The list goes on and on.

The car was going to be a track car, so there is no way ill try to fix this one. Its just not worth the risk of something breaking at high speeds...

Just gonna get my money, buy the car back from insurance, take pretty much the whole drive line, and all the accessories i might want for my next FD and be on my way...

Since the kid was in a rental car, and he had insurance my insurance was telling me I might be able to go after both of the companies and have a better chance of getting the value I deserve. So we will see how that goes.

Just to replace my front and rear bumpers it was over $2,500. The pieces alone minus all the trim was $1800 from mazda. That didnt include paint or mounting.

There is a pain and suffering component to this. No emotion needed. With an injury it kicks it up to a whole new level. The victim should document his injury and pain complaints.

What will happen is that after a claim is filed, the offender's insurance company will offer a settlement and try to get it over quickly and off the books. This is where the bargaining begins. DON'T SETTLE early. Hold out for an advantageous settlement. There is big wrong on the other side of this case and our forum member has suffered more than just property damage. He should press his case.
It doesn't even require him to hire a lawyer....just threaten to hire one. Don't settle for the insurance company's first offer.

I absolutely agree with JConn, having been on the receiving end of some bad insurance deals and fighting for what I deserved in others, you absolutely don't have to take the insurance companies offer until they've satisfied you. One good way to get what you have comming is to show values of RX7s in your area via ads etc, make sure to account for custom parts lost etc. When it comes to insurance you should always bargain hard to protect your rights. Also if your worried about them trying to fix it, have it sent to a body shop of your choice (the most expensive and best in your area) ussually you just have to get 2 quotes, if they're high enough it'll definately get totalled, but your bargaining up for the worth of the car will also make them try harder to fix it.
