my experience of my fd (daily driver)
my experience of my fd (daily driver)
Until my rx7 got hit and ran, my rx was pretty much a daily driver (well kinda) for 6 months
Here are my experiences.
I drove it alot. But i only allotted myself 1000 miles a month.
So after 6000 miles and 3 oil changes, i am quit happy.
If the car is maintained i dont see why it cant be driven a lot.
I am always cleaning my car, i went though 4 bottles of mguires quick detailer.
The motor and turboes only have a total of 20k on them now, and honestly i dont see a problem with driving my rx7 12,000-15000 miles a year.
Plus a lot of the miles have been highway miles due to longer trips to see people.
I love my rx7, i would take it over 99.9% of any other car ever made.
edit------------------------------
Also, everything on the car is newer. The body has 120k on it, but the whole drivetrain has less than 40k. new supension, new almost everything else.
I love the car, i dont care if i had to replace everything.
I will probobly buy another one that has been ruined in a few years to return the favor karma wise to the last two people that restored mine to glory.

I have had mine for over a year, i got it Sept. 2004, love it to death. I bought it with 78k on the motor and drove it for a few months then put it away and then drove it all this summer. I am always thinking i am putting to many miles on it, i dont want the motor to start having problems. As of now the car has about 82k, i keep thinking that is to much, i need to stop driving it so much but i cant help it , they are so fun. My car is pretty much all stock. NGK plugs and wires and greddy intake and boost guage, thats all i have for now. Next on my list is to get exhaust, ast, eliminate airpump, and boost controller. Just trying to let the car breathe better.
All in all i think that you could drive the car daily, i personally dont want to, i get to paranoid. I normally drive it on those cool summer nights here in Nebraska.

with the 4.77 gears, gas milage is out the window
being sequential the car sounded like a big diesel semi, the turbo would always spool.
but hey, who needs gas milage in a sports car anyways.
i think i am the only person with 4.77 gears around. I have the invoice for them from rotary performance online (rx7.com) for proof for the doubters.
My suggestion is start an emergancy replacement fund for the motor. I currently have 345$ saved up. I wont touch it for anything else

What's the stock manual and automatic final gear?
I've been driving mine daily to/from work and she's been allright.
Not very prolematic. 90% of the drive to work is highway, so gas mileage is actually about 275 a tank now. Not too bad, I guess.
I don't LIKE driving it daily, considering the drive to/from work isn't exactly "fun" or "cruise-worthy". I've got my Honduh for that. :P
I just hope I can sell my FD soon, though. I don't need it, nor have a real purpose for owning one any longer. I have higher priorities in my life, now.
~45k or so on my motor at this point. 120k on the body. Good paint and interior. Yada yada.

4.77?? god DAMN! haha...
i dd mine for a couple weeks once...same problem as m.s.03. miles. got mine with 83k over a year ago as well. i know its not the original engine, i have no idea the miles on it or how long it has been in there. runs like a freakin champ, no problems ever. i just dont like the idea of "wasting" miles on work, know what i mean? so i drove my 2nd gen with expired tags till i replaced my cats and got new tags! it DID do pretty good during that time though.
oh heres my other problems. stepping out all the time to check on it. have to haha...not fun to drive in traffic with all those maniacs. had too many people parking way to close. i kicked a dent in some dumbass dealers car for parking about an 1/8 inch from my bumper.
beater or alternate car is a must as far as im concerned.

I dailied mine for 17 months no problems. I quit because I now have 3 small dings in the car. I had none on original paint. I also parked out in the middle of no where. 72K on original motor. I now beat the living crap out of my 88 rx7 NA on the way to work each day.

well, by driving every day i mean "fun" driving. I guess its the luxeries of being a college student.
Stock auto gears are 3.90s, and the 5 speed gears are 4.10s. The 4.77s make 1st gear a little too short, but it makes it 1st gear pretty much a launch gear. It is definatley going to help my 60fters once i get some more power under it. Also, they help on roll races alot. Also it puts me right were i want to be with the 8th and qtr mile. Right now i have to shift into 4th in the qtr, but at 8100 rpms in 4th gear i am at 124 mph and since i have the jdm tranny it puts my top speed at 156.
If switch to a single turbo, or push my turboes to the max once i get my stand alone, i should be at the end of 4th in the qtr
the gears make me competavite it very high speeds. Where i race an 05 z06 vette, from 100 mph to where i topped out i held a car on him and shifting into 5th i pulled 3 cars before i hit top speed.
I *held off* a 06 zo6 at high speeds. He gave me a little head start and in we were almost at a car difference in 5th and he only pulled to my front tires.
although that was in 40 degree weather and 12 psi.
my gas milage is weird. At times ive gotten close to 200 miles on 20$ (that about 9 gallons) and at times i have gotten 100 miles for 20$ (about 9 gallons)
so, it just depends on how heavy of a foot i have at the time.
