Question Montego Blue Paint Question

I autocross and while pulling off my electrical tape car numbers, some of my clear coat came off on the tape! This happened on both doors for a section of 1" X 3". One autobody shop said it would cost me like $200 per door because they would have to repaint and re-clear coat the door.

My question is... is the Montego Blue paint job a simple base coat/mica additive and clear clearcoat or is a 3 stage paint with a base coat, a tinted clearcoat and then a clear clearcoat?

Need help asap. I need to make a decision on getting it fixed.

The guy I bought my 94 from ran a body shop. He did a repaint when he got the car. Told me that to get the match he did a 3 stage paint job (I beleive him 'cause this paint is really thick). Now what he meant by a 3 stage is beyond my knowledge. When I asked him about how much he woould charge to repaint the car for me if and when I needed it he said that Montego Blue 3 stage is a $4K paint job for the whole car. I may just buy a spray can if I need a reapint.

It's a 3 stage. You must strip the original paint off, otherwise the paint will not match the rest of the car.

It's a base coat, followed by a coat of mica, then a clear coat.

Are you sure about the 3stage paint. The guy at the body shop said the paint catalog only called out for mixing the mica with the base coat, thus making it a 2stage paint.

He also said they wouldn't have to paint the door if when wet sanding they didn't get into the base metal.

my mistake. That's right. I was thinking CYM. As for not having to paint the door, do you mean they're just going to shoot clear coat on it and that's it? Or are they just going to wet sand it?

Sounds like he was talking about wet sanding the clear coat back aways from the damage so that he can blend in the new clear coat. If he gets into the base metal or the base coat gets thin, then he will have to repaint the door from scratch. Seems excessive for a little clear coat damage.
