I have to admit, I watched that V8 honk down the straight with a bit of a wistful look, knowing it also had frosty A/C, no cooling issues, and the driver pretty confident it would drive home. It was power and torque you could SEE track side. NICE car man.

But, I so thoroughly enjoy shooting three foot flames as I go by big displacement cars on the track, I'm not sure it would be the same.

Fritz Flynn 05-23-13 01:14 PM

I wish I had taken a ride in one of the v8s but was too busy, hopefully next time

Fritz I've been trying to to find some more comparison south course track times to compare to yours. Got any links you may know about? All I keep finding are sport bike times. Would love to see how your little 300 rwhp Fd compares to Corvettes/Vipers and such.

Smokey The Talon 05-23-13 01:47 PM

So Fritz and Peter, can we get a comparison between your 2 cars out on track? Fritz I know that you're a proponent of a small single for the track and Peter you've had a well sorted twins car for a long while. How do they compare?

ptrhahn 05-23-13 02:26 PM

Fritz drove my car over the weekend—along with tons of others over the years, so I'll let him offer thoughts. Power wise, the twins are about the same as his small single... the advantage with the single is weight and heat. The advantage with the twins—believe it or not—is reliability. You'll see a lot less cracked manifolds, warped housings, etc.,... the factory logs are pretty tough.

Montego 05-23-13 02:31 PM

^ So is your car sequential or non sequential? I would assume non-seq given your power but you never know

ptrhahn 05-23-13 03:04 PM

It's sequential, '99 twins and factory 'noids.

Not many clubs run the South because it's so brutal on the cars.

I ran a time trial back in 2005 with the THSCC against two Radicals and Chris Desalvo in a track prepped c5 Z06 type corvette (very good driver/possibly pro don't know for sure) and lost to one of the radicals but was faster than chris with a 1.16 something. I think the faster radical ran a 12 or 14. I'm twice the driver now that I was then so probably a second or two faster at this time. With fresh rubber and my car making 350 plus I think a 1.14 or low 15 would be easy.

The rotary race car that was there with us can run a 1.04 on the South course which is INSANE!!! I think that car is like 1400lbs and makes 250 HP which is a 5.6 power to weight car running on slicks so it's going to be SILLY fast on a short technical track like the south where handling sharp corners, short straights and short brake zones is crucial.

I have a small single turbo so our cars have similar power delivery.

Pete's car has more torque and mine runs a little cooler. I think I have the option of making more power without too much ill effect or could probably go up to about 375 without too much heat. I'd say Pete is limited to 350 before heat would be a problem.

If the twins are properly installed with new gasket etc.... they are fine. If the single is a good one with a good wastegate etc... it's also fine. I probably got about 3k miles when my HKS to4e kit was new before it started to break. 1st the downpipe fell off, then the exhaust manifold cracked, then the wastegate failed, then the turbo manifold warped etc...etc.... At this point I probably have to start all over with a new kit before it would go 3k miles again with no problems.

I've never used the twins for very long so I really can't compare reliability but Pete has had VERY good luck in regard to the twins and reliability but with that said over the years I probably AVG more track miles in a year than Pete does in 4. Each driver will also abuse the car differently. I tend to be really hard on everything because I usually over drive the car or stay at or beyond the limit so I'm ready for TT type driving and that's how I like to drive. If the car isn't sliding or out of control I'm not driving hard enough.

PS The twins will typically blow more oil as well.

Here's another vid of some Ride Alongs.

I can't remember who the passengers are but I bet they will know.

I also have a vid with Trey in it which I'll post up tomorrow or when I have time.

He's easy to recognize hehe not to mention I had to use a shoe horn to get him in the car :D

Awesome. That is the only way to run the twins :)

Notice the little formula race car at the beginning of the vid. He comes out of the pits as I'm going down the front straight and just takes off.

Yea that was pretty embarrassing that I couldn't figure out how to use the 5 point harness. I felt like a 5 year old being strapped in a car seat by my daddy. LOL! :)

Carpenter 05-24-13 12:14 AM

Wow, what a day we had on Monday !!

Many thanks to Gordon, David, Fritz, Peter, Bill and all, who helped make this event a success !! The guys at Viper, (Victor, Corey, and crew) for all their support. :icon_tup:

Thanks to all the rotorheads who came to ViR, and Modified Magazine, for making this
event special !!

I have video of the rally session (off track exploration ) with Peter, LOL !! and will post it up soon.

Also, thanks to Hoi of Tokyo Grill, for taking care of us Sunday and Monday !!

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Always good to see you :icon_tup:

Look forward to the VID and if any one else has video post them up.

In searching for lap times on the South I didn't find much but I found this little nugget a rotary powered mg midget:

I also discovered some guys discussing the 2005 TT that I referenced and it looks like both radical cars were faster than my FD and I ran a 16 followed by Chris with an 18. I was driving Brad Barber's old FD which was a super cool track car (should of kept that one).

The FD is a killer car on the S course because it's short and technical so it gives light weight good handling cars a big advantage.

Thanks for the follow up and insight. With my continued gasket troubles over the past couple of years (I appreciate your thoughts in my other thread) I was starting to think that my only option for reliability was a single turbo....sounds like it's not quite the solution I would hope for either. I don't have any temp issues when the turbos stay together, so I'll keep plugging away at the gasket issue and hopefully be able to enjoy some of the reliability that Peter has had.

There's no secret recipe other than good ingredients because all turbo cars are just a PIA!

rx7 SE 05-24-13 11:23 AM

Can there be a list made of each car's best lap times? With associated driver of course. I'm also curious on the lap times for the v8 FD's.

Copeland 05-24-13 11:27 AM

Fritz,

Are you using a HKS cast manifold now? I know I've cracked my single turbo manifold 3 times over the past 2 years and my downpipe one time. Seems like the cast manifold is the way to go.

Yep the cast manifold last longer.

Couldn't hear the commentary when you were buckling him in on the Video. Even so, LMAO just watching the scenario. I'm sure that Trey enjoyed the ride along. Love watching you ride the fine line so skillfully Fritz :). Someday I hope to get my own ridealong!!

Thanks!

Commentary at the end.

I could tell he wasn't feeling well so I came in after about 4 or 5 laps.
