Milage unknown??? value?

a friend of mine is looking at a 93 rx7 r1 in silver. it has 100k (supposedly) on the chassis. But when he installed a reman engine, the milage was some how reset. so it only shows the miles that are on the new engine. would this lower the value of the car for a private purchase? I know at a dealership it cuts the value by up to 40-50%

thanks for your input.

btw the new motor has 16k on it, and its in stock form

You should be able to run a CarFax to get some sense of the last known mileage.

Having this discrepancy is always going to devalue the car. I would not pay more than $8k, and only then if the car were in decent cosmetic shape.

Just FYI, there's no such thing as a 93 R1 in Silverstone.

I've never heard of anyone knowing how to reset the odometer - it's hardcoded in there. Unless the thing failed and they replaced it with a new, 0-mile odometer.

I would be VERY cautious with this car. Too many red flags here.

i agree. the car is not for me. I already have one But the guy said that it is a 93, no sunroof ( I assumed r1) which model was the silver made in?

I dont doubt the milage the guy said, its just the way that not having an exact value of milage affects it. Especially if he his going to sell it down the road.

The guy is asking 18. I told my friend I would offer around 10k.

No sunroof means a base model. Only tourings had sunroofs.

The 1993 model without the sunroof would have been the Base model.

it appears that he does. I paid 12 for my 93 touring. and with this car being a TMU and same milage.....no way would I pay more. ok so its a base model then. lol. I feel bad for my friend, ever since I got mine, he wants one so bad. Oh well, he will have to keep on searching.

Thanks Guys!
