midpipe or gutted cat?
well obviously, a midpipe would be better...
but, right now i have a downpipe, and the gutted cat. would it be worth the money to buy a midpipe to get rid of the hollow cat, or would it be fine to just leave it on there for now? i would think it would be /almost/ the same, but i dont know how much better the midpipe will flow. TOO much flow wouldnt be good yet, i am still on the stock computer. tell me what you think
thanks

do you want your car to be fast for a few months or to have a motor for a few years
running a midpipe or cleared out exhaust on the stock computer is the most affective way to help add to the unreliable name that the rx-7 has
Even on an upgraded computer I would be extremely worried.
If you can find a way to keep the boost to 10 psi no matter what and are confident in this method go for it

sounds like to you need to start saving those paychecks like the rest of us and join the crowd; you need to get the Power FC computer, midpipe, exhaust and intercooler and then have a good dyno shop tune it.

The 3-mod rule doesn't work. Check out wade's site here for the proof (several of us have also verified it ourselves):

A midpipe/gutted cat is a very major mod on an FD. I think it is insane to run one with the stock ecu because of the boost spiking and creeping that tends to happen. Either get a hi-flow cat to replace the gutted cat or do not do any more modifications until you can get an ecu. Getting an intake or cat-back exhaust would be very risky at this point. In fact, leaving things the way they are is risky. Get a boost gauge and verify what your boost readings are, especially at the transition and in 4th and 5th gear (higher engine loads --boost creeping situation).
