midpipe buisness
Are midpipes street legal, i geuss im just a little confused here because i know fd's have a pre cat and a main cat, so when you go and do an exaust system to replace the stock one, what is street legal best to get, downpipe?midpipe?anything im forgetting to say?And if a midpipe is illegal is that to say its impossible to shoot flames legally. I'm just trying in my ehad to construct an exaust system and it's confusing me like no other.

Well, your also very confusing to my head the way that was worded but... If i am correct in understanding you. It is very possible to have a downpipe and still pass emissions, it is possible to have a downpipe and highflow cat. and still pass emissions, and it will be very hard to have a downpipe and midpipe and still pass emissions. If you are looking to shoot flames while still being street legal, go to ebay and search for type R, tenzo, type s, ricer, flame shooter. Something will have to come up.
I personally, have passed emission with my downpipe and highflow cat, PFS PMS, HKS cat-back, and apexi-intake, while still popping a flame every now and then. My highflow cat was put together by a local guy though.

The legality of midpipes depends on your local regulations. Some states (countries) don't have smog regulations requiring certain emission standards by vehicles, some states do.
You can ask someone in your local club, or just talk to any place that does car inspections in your area.

for me (california) i'm 99.9% sure a downpipe is illegal. i'm 100% sure the midpipe is illegal. an aftermarket intercooler is also probably illegal, as well as aftermarket intake. basically california everything is illegal. you can still pass the sniffer test, but they can still bust you on the visual. that's why you see companies say their stuff is EPA and CARB certified....

There are three parts to the exhaust:
pre-cat: this is replaced with a downpipe
main cat: this is replaced with hi-flow cat or midpipe
cat-back exhaust: the rest of the exhaust including muffler.
In all 50 states, it is illegal to remove the main cat for street use. In all 50 states, it is legal to replace the cat-back exhaust depending on individual state requirements for noise. In many states, I believe it's legal to remove the pre-cat but that's a gray area. As TTB pointed out, it's illegal to touch the pre-cat or main-cat in California (and other strict emissions states most likely).
