Massive blue smoke on startup, PCV valve hopefully?
Massive blue smoke on startup, PCV valve hopefully?
Let me start off by saying that after my FD is on for 30+ seconds it starts to smoke heavily out the exhaust(Blue, definatly oil), lasting anywhere from 2-5 mins.
It goes through about a quart of oil every 150-200 miles. The coolant level seems to be fine. I took it to Tripoint here in LA, they basically told me they didn't know where the oil leak was coming from and that it is probably o-ring failure. I don't know if I am happy with that answer.
I purchased this FD a little over 2 months ago. It is close to stock with 40k on a reman. When i purchased it there was no noticable smoke on startup and has progressivly goten worse.
Does this sound like o-ring failure? From what I've been reading oil is usually found in the coolant or vice versa? are there any other symptoms besides this and white smoke? I don't have either of these.
Any advice is helpful.

It sounds like a turbo failure to me, the colors of smoke are one indicator, orig turbo it is def on the fritz:
Unbolt the banded clamp on the intake pipe at the Turbo's compressor inlet.
This will give you access to the turbine wheel. Reaching into your turbo feel the axle in the center of the turbine and try to wiggle it around. If there is much play at all it has failed. LPTs before it.
I would strongly reccomend checking this sooner than later to ensure pieces are not sucked into the motor at high rpm's. Sorry.

I got the same thing, excessive blue smoke at start up, lasts about 2-3min, but I'm not sure if the turbos are leaking, I got a small oil leak around the oil pan so I'm not sure how much oil is lost due to that leak and how much to the turbo leak. Last time I checked (about 2 months ago) the shafts were ok, minor play but seems to be normal the 'blades' on the propellers looked dry. Motor has also been recently rebuilt, mileage on the turbos in unknown. I'm lost now with regards to the smoke. However, recently turbos started whistling under deceleration.

a little more info on my situation..It's definatly not the turbos. no smoke on WOT, and they are boosting properly. I also got a compression test, it checks out.
I may have a slight coolant leak, will check again later. No white smoke out the back.

No smoke at WOT, proper boost, and lack of excess shaft play DOES NOT preclude the possibility of leaking piston ring seals on the turbos letting oil out at idle. They tend to seal up better when spinning at higher rpms.
