Lower temps = more "popping"?

The past couple days the temps outside have dropped from like 80 to 40 and has been raining to boot, yesterday when I started up my rex it revved to about 3k rpms like usual, but when it dropped down to normal idle I heard much more popping than usual. If I rev it a little to 2 or 3k and drop it down again it keeps popping, and feels like it is running really rough, the whole car shakes a bit with the rough exhaust. It starts popping less once it warms up and runs smoother, but it seems like even after running to full temp it's popping more than it had in warmer weather.

Should I have it checked out? Maybe need new spark plugs?

Oh, also, this is a funny one and i'll prolly get flamed, but I went to check the oil yesterday and couldn't find the dipstick.. lol. I have technical manuals from the previous owner, but no factory manual for that kinda stuff. So, where is it? Hehe.

#1 Don't let your car rev up to 3k. Start the car in 1st gear and this will prevent it from happening.

#2 From how you explain it, this sounds pretty normal to me.

#3 The dipstick is located on the driver side. It has a small yellow handle. The handle is about as thick as a coat hanger. Very small.

Hope this helps.
