low milage FDs - change oil at 2-3K or 3mo?
low milage FDs - change oil at 2-3K or 3mo?
Just curious... I changed my oil 3 times in the last year - thinking about it, I only put 3K miles on it in the same amount of time.
For those who don't drive the car every day, do you have a particular time limit before changing or do you wait for the miles to tick around regardless?

I go strictly off of mileage. I have one car that I have only changed the oil once in the past 3 years. I have only put about 1500 miles on it, though. Trying to keep them down for resale value.
Whichever comes first...
Oil becomes acidic as it sits in the engine, so that is why the time limit is part of the recommendation. Synthetic will stay fresh longer if you don't drive the car much and would like to just change it on the mileage and ignore the calendar.

I change mine about every 2500-3000 miles. If the car has been sitting for 2 or more months (like during winter), I have it changed as soon as I'm ready to start driving it again.

I think some owners get a little too **** about their oil changes. Once or twice a year, or every 3,000 miles is just fine. The additive package in the oil helps to neutralize the acid compounds and keep the dirt in suspension.
The coolant and the brake fluid are also subject contamination, yet you don't hear people bragging about how often they change their coolant. And I've heard of many more FD engines being harmed by cooling failures than by oil related failures.

JConn, I'm with you there.
I would change the oil every 3k miles or less, OR at least once a year.
As long as you fire up the engine and go for a spin once a month, any vapor in the engine should be evaporated. This will prevent rust of internal parts. Dont' forget to put some gas stabilizer in the tank too. If you do store it for winter, I would change the oil before storage though.

I daily drove my car so i changed it every 1500 miles. The first year i had the car i put 30k miles on it.....not that i'm **** but with the amount of driving i did with the car it was better that or *POP*.
That's why now i bought a beater car so that my next FD will not have to be my daily.

I change my oil every month regardless. I run no airfilter though so I kinda have to. My buddies change theirs every month too. Its a high recomendation over here for every month or 1500-2000 km..

No air filter?! Why not? How do you stop grit from getting in the combustion chamber? (You can change your oil everyday, and it won't stop that.) Apparently I'm missing something here. Maybe you can clue me in.
You'll destroy your engine soon if you aren't using air filters. That means anything (sand, dust, leaf) get into your engine. That's crazy!
Even race cars have air filters. Don't ruin your engine. You can change your oil everyday but if you suck in a little piece of metal debris, your engine is finished.
