Lost of Power

So I'm driving down the road about 70MPH in 5th gear around 2.5K RPMs, when I hear a pop followed by a high pitch sounds that reminds me of a blow off valve. I throttle down and the pitch of the sounds decreases accordingly. I pull over the side of the road and I hear nothing unusual. I check the temperature, and it’s still reading “good”, oil pressure is showing approximately 15psi.

So I get back in and proceed to go about my way… unfortunately I stall the car. Hmm… strange… I never stall the car… so I start her back up and stall it again. I then start her up again and give it a lot of throttle and off I go. Here’s the catch, I lost ~90% of my power. Starting from a stand still feels like I’m in 3rd gear trying to start. I get home and park the car; completely forgetting about the problem for the night. Next day I get in and she feels normal. Nothing unusual, full power behind the throttle.

So I’m driving along this time around 80MPH (again in 5th gear around 3K RPMs) and I hear the pop again and then the high pitch sound much like a stuck blow off valve followed by lost of power again. Same symptoms as before. This time it persist over the course of the night, in fact I parked the car for 2 days and finally got a chance to check it out last night. While checking the motor the sounds is still there, it seemed to be coming from left of the throttle body and under all of those pipes and hoses.

I throttled the engine manually and the sound was there, but after a while of trying to figure out where it was located the sound stopped. I’m not sure if the power was back though, I didn’t want to take the car out just yet especially since I’m not sure what the problem is.

Anyone have an idea what this might be? Or how I should proceed to resolve this problem?

It sounds like the pop-whoosh might be driven by high underhood temps. Normally a sound like that is a one-time event, and I'd recommend that you look for the burst hose or loose connection, but since you say parking it temporarily restores function, I'm thinking heat related.

Pull the ECU codes first to see if that leads you to any codes.

Do you have a boost gauge? This is the next thing you need to consider because power = boost, and the first thing to know is if this is just a boost problem or an actual engine/ECU problem.

I dont know what to tell you here just need to start cheking everything over and over and over again.there eather something came off or something blew up there is atleast 70 vacum hoses under the intake manifold hince there 70 something things that could have gone wrong. the wooshing sound is probably made by a leak somewhere it heats up the crack or what ever it may be gets biger lettin the air out of the intake had a similar experiance. Call me when ever you get off work maybe I can drive to your houser and see if we can figure something out.

Thanks Dave, I'll try pulling the ECU codes tonight when Midaugas comes over to help me out.

I dont' have a boost guage quite yet, waiting for them to come in but I guess I could get one from AutoZone for the mean time to test with.

Minda, I'll call you when I get off work today.

Thanks guys! Hopefully all of this will be resolved here soon! I wana drive my RX-7!!!!
