Looking for some 2nd opinions...

Hello there,

Just wanted to ask a question. I'm from Ireland, I bought an 1996 RX7 Touring-X from Japan last November, 43,000 miles on the clock.

Today I was driving and I heard a 'thud', the car wouldn't accelorate and i pulled over. The engine was shaking quite unusually, I phoned the rotary specialist in Ireland(we've only got 1!), he told me that it sounded like an apex seal & the engine would need a rebuild.

I'm a bit let down, because he told me it would be fine 'til 60,000 miles. I had a compression test recently(0.63, 0.63, 0.61 - 0.61, 0.63, 0.63) and the guy that carried it out(from the UK) said it was normal for its mileage.

I've been told that I can't use an ApexiPFC as its an automatic, I've been using the closet RON to 100 octane which is 99.2 here. Is there anything I can do to help this after I have it rebuilt or does it sound more likely that the car was clocked in Japan?

Cheers

60k miles is a rough-and-ready ballpark estimate - engine could last fewer miles or much longer.

The only way to verify if it is a seal is to do a compression test. Could be a popped hose, for example.

I'm not sure what units your compression numbers are but if you meant ~6.3kgf/cm2 this equates to ~90psi, which indicates a weak engine that has little life left. (Assuming the compression test was done properly.)

Well, I went through the possiblilties of the hoses over the phone, he said he was 99% certain of it being a seal. I think you have it right with my compression test, the guy that carried it out could have told me it was weak, I mean, I asked him a few times what I should do next, he said keep driving it.

Thx for the help

Eddy Doyle, Maxol's E5 is 99.2 octane, I bought a PFC and I was instructed to sell it, IBCJapan.co.jp
