Looking to buy a 92 FD from Japan

I've got a friend that imports cars into Canada as his job. He's been telling me that FD's are available from 92, and this has got me wondering.

Are these cars nightmares to own if reliability is an issue? I wouldn't be doing any major performance modifications to the car, only exhaust, and intake. The boost I wouldnt touch either. Is this a bad idea to get, and run stock if I'm looking for a nice, powerful daily driver? I would only be putting 15K at most on the car a season.

These cars just look SO good though! I would love to own one.
It would make a nice upgrade from my 3rd gen Supra!

This topic comes up almost every day on the Calgary import boards, all the JDM fanboys have had their fun with 300zs's and the r32 skylines, and all creaming their shorts over the availability of FD's this november, for 1/2 the price of what a LHD FD would sell for.

I think the OP isn't looking for info on the FD, but more along the lines of what to expect from a Japanese 1992. Here is what a very knowledgeable Calgarian had to say.

I've worked on a handful of early rhd fd's, they are ridden hard and put away wet... Yeah alot of Japanese cars are low mileage, but with the way things are in Japan with rx7 owners, alot of those low miles are track miles...After they have been tracked every weekend for 15 years, they rattle, squeak, and creak... All the bushings are pretty much done in the back end and the drivelines are tired..
I worked on an Auction car that was being sent to Hong kong, it was a newer FD, about 98 so, on the hoist is looked like someone took a sledge hammer to the underneath..Top grade auction car though, beautiful car as long as you only looked at the top side..
I think the auction grade is misleading, it can be top grade on auction, but most of them are still piles compared to cars on the private sale lots over there...Watch out for cars that are tarted up with aftermarket parts, the bling is there to distract from the frame rust/buckleling... Japan has its crooks to and they love the car/parts auction sites...
I think in the end, you would end up spending the same amount of money if you just went and found a decent Lhd FD that you could test drive and inspect before hand, instead of buying a rhd basket case and fixing all the hidden damage, and worn out ****..
We keep cars longer here so we tend to fix the little things that wear over time, the Japanese dont, they know its gonna be expensive to fix the whole car come inspection time when the car gets a little older so they beat on it, then sell it...
No different than my Mother in laws Suzuki wagon R, she was told on the first inspection that on the second inspection it would need more parts replace than the car was worth, so she drove the car for just over another year, and did nothing to it for that year, no oil changes, maintenance, nada...About a week before inspection, it went to auction and she bought a new car..Some lucky foriegner bought that car......

For the sake of interest to the Americans on this board, the law in canada is such that once a car is 15 years old, their are no federal restrictions on it's import. Be it a LHD, RHD, or anything. It must pass a provincial safety inspection, which may or may not require you replace parts not recognized by transport canada. It's not difficult for cars that had a LHD counterpart, however some of the skyline guys have been having a tough time of it lately. It's caused a massive glut of cheap RHD cars, mostly skylines, 240's, 300zx's, and MR-2s on Canadian streets. More noticable the more west you go in the country.

There is a board member here, Fubawu i believe, who bought a JDM skyline GT-R, who may be able to shed some light on the subject.
