leaking seal

I am considering the purchase of a 93 base automatic with 66K miles whose original owner says there is a seal leak which is costing $500 to repair. It will be repaired and I am having a Mazda service department go thru the car prior to purchase. Any idea what leak would cost $500 to repair? Concerns?

Possibly the rear main oil seal? You have to remove the transmission and flywheel to replace it.

i have a 93 fd with auto trans. don't let the dealer look at anything .... find a good rotary shop and have them check out the car. read the forum you will learn a lot before you buy or start to mod.

If you have any mechanical skills you can do it yourself with a shop manual and a lift. if you(or your mechanic) change the rear main seal, change the O-ring in front of the rear main seal while you are at it. just make sure you don't move anything when you take the rear stationary gear where the rear main seal is located or you'll have to rebuild your engine.
