It is good to here a happy ending and to find you at one with your FD.

Now comes the brutal part. In your story, there are several people who need to be beaten in the head with a pipe wrench. First and foremost is the Bimmer mechanics who did the exhaust install. Secondly is the author of the treatise that started this thread, for accepting that workmanship, and then driving the vehicle with said workmanship.

Now that that is done, I can't help but think those BMW mechanics saw you coming a mile away during your ownership of your previous vehicle. Any decent muffler shop would have done a better install of the exhaust, for probably half the price.

The author of the exposition does not need to be beaten with a pipe wrench. I, instead, was taught an even better lesson by my car catching on FIRE.

It's always good to get a little saddistic up in here. Oh yeah...

Now that is done, I can't help to think what animals have actually been found inside those huge mufflers on the really fast looking geo metros. Any decent muffler design would have done a better design and incorporated a gate like structure at the tip. For probably half the price.
