Question just raced my friends gst

I just got done racing my friend, he has a 1998 Eclipse GS-T and he has an HKS blow off valve and a K&N filter, he has a couple of BOV mods too so he spikes to like 20psi for like 2 seconds then it drops to like 13psi. He beat me everytime from a 40mph role. Should a stock RX7 be able to beat an eclipse with those mods? I think there might be something wrong with my car, it has a bad high rpm miss, i hear that i need to get a better ignition thing to help that. What do you think, is there something wrong with my car? Should i be able to be him?

Thats just embarrasing. Tell him your car needs apex seals, new turbos, cooling system mods, and a fuel filter

What the hell! I dont understand how be beats me. I do wanna get a RB dual exhaust and a downpipe and a Greddy Airinx Intake, that ought to take care of him.

Adding more mods isn't the solution, getting your car working properly is. You don't need an ignition amp, you need to fix your car.

*last time fuel filter was changed?
*last time spark plugs/wires were changed?
*last time air filter was replaced?
*boost pattern?
*mods?
*mileage on motor?

Don't be adding mods, fix this problem and you should beat him. Why is he spiking to 20 PSI anyway?

Stock car in perfect running order is able to run a 13.3 with a "good" driver. Maybe your friend has more done to his car than he's telling you? 20psi spike for a few seconds is a lot of boost for a car with supposedly very little done.

i think stock boost is like 18psi i dont thing it should be as low as 13, those babie motors need a lot of boost to make power.

You must not of recirculated. My HKS was free so I put that on because the stock CBV leaks around 12psi.

He means I cut the stock dump tube to allow more airflow through the intake pipe.

As for the spiking, a stock 4g63 has a BCS restictor which restricts boost. I have modified mine to have more flow. I have nothing ported and stock exhaust so air just flows past my wastegate creating the spike. So, I'm running very lean for a couple of seconds while it spikes at WOT(haven't had time to put on my MBC).

Anyway, his car seems fine. There's a little hesitation around mid RPM's but I'm thinking that's just the second turbo kicking in(don't know how smooth the transition is supposed to be, but psi does drop to 8 at that time correct?)

I usually pull a little at the start because of my little T-25 turbo, then after that it's pretty much even, so it's no dramatic loss like some of you may be thinking.

P.S. If you haven't figured this out by now, I'm the one with the GST.

I've got a friend in jersey that races at atco raceway with a 92 gsx. He put on a exhaust and cranked it up to 25psi. He bought the car for 1500 and doesnt care about it. Oh and it runs about a 12.3-12.5 regularly. Kinda funny really.

Please, stop harping on him and telling him misinformation. He just got the car and I'm learning him up right one mod at a time .

Why is that funny? I would say he is pretty stupid to run 25psi with an exhaust and the 14b turbo. He has to have fuel mods to run that high of psi...

He should probably be well into the 11's if he had the supporting mods.

Yeah, AWD is nice, although RX-7's seem to grip extremely well. And you should really tell him to put some fuel mods in. Or tell him I'll buy it for a couple hundred bucks .

I already helped him put new spark plugs and wires in.

Like I said, his car runs fine, you can just feel a little something going on around mid RPM's. Like I said before, I suspect that the second turbo kicking in, can anybody confirm this?

Spend $50 on a crush bent precat back exhaust and his RX7 will be capable of mid 12's if his driving is up to snuff, requires practice.

maybe he needs more downforce? lol :P

In all seriousness before you do any more racing or any mods at all go read the newbie faqs/commonly asked questions and read up on the reliability mods, the FAQs answer SO MANY questions that even after half a year of owning this car Im still looking up lots of stuff in it. Those 2 sources should give you enough information to get you started on the basic troubleshooting, but if you cant figure out what the problem is after getting the necessary gauges and changing fluids, plugs, maintanence stuff, etc. I would suggest taking it to a rotary speciliast? Or maybe it was just a fluke of a race?

Not sure what is wrong without getting a boost reading, but something has to be wrong with that loss. Unless of course you can't drive?
