Question Just got my turbo off.....need advice!

I just pulled off the secondary turbo black plastic elbow and have access to the compressor wheel. (Im very new to the car so dont flame me when i dont know the part names )
The shaft has play in it a tiny bit. I can also see where theres a line where it has been rubbing the housing. My thought is i need new turbos, but i want to hear it from some experts. Thanks for the help , Tommy

The secondary Turbo doesn't have a plastic elbow attached to it,...but the Primary Turbo does. The "line" may just be a thin oil ring that's accumulated. See if it'll rub off with your finger or a rag.

A little Shaft play should'nt be of any major concern. How do the Compressor Wheel blades look??. No chips or abnormal bends?? How many miles on the Turbos??

The reason im askin is because one turbo has started whining really bad. But yes, the line did rub off and the shaft has about an 1/8" of play. May not be a big problem, but somethings effed up. And as far as i know there is 124k on the turbos, i was never told they were replaced.

Is the whining more profound above or below 4500rpm??

Is the engine original (124K also). ...Or is it a Reman or original but rebuilt??

33k on the motor, and i havent taken it past maybe 5k because someone on here said if the turbo was bad the blades may break and go through the intake. But it whines pretty much if i hit the gas. Idle is perfect.

THe shaft play should be taken care of by the oil....provided its not a lot of play.

You need to get in there and determine if it's touching the sides or not. If so, your turbos are in bad shape. If you need a mechanic's mirror and flashlight to do so, so be it. Just don't manhandle it since the bearings are fragile when there is no pressurized oil supply running through them.

They're fabricated out of brass.

Does that mean you consider them to be durable or fragile then?

(Steel on brass in dry contact is not good)

If you have a UPS or Fed Ex account and can ship from home it will make shipping alot cheaper. ( I work from home I know) just a tip.

There's really not much one can do to harm the Bearing(s) with the Shaft while under assembly,...UNLESS the turbo assembly interior is extremely dirty. There's usually no less than about 0.001 of play or clearance between them. So even if the Shaft is rotated a few times, it shouldn't harm anything. The only possible way one could potentially break a Bearing or the Shaft is if the Bearing Housing has been inhibited with rust, which can happen if the Turbos have been sitting a long time without operation with proper lubrication.

The Bearings are pretty durable. They're built to withstand Shaft rpm exceeding 130K rpm. And they usually last well past 60K miles before they start to show signs of wear. Proper lubrication and frequent oil changes are the Turbos best friend.

I find FedEx to be very cheap. I signed up online, and print the label and tape it on. I just drop off the package at the local FedEx joint - it saves a day and I don't have to wait in the line.
