Just bought an FD, transmission is physically wobbly and loose

Just bought a salvaged FD. The transmission is loose on this thing and im in need of help. When power is applied the stick shift moves up and down and audiable thunks are heard.

I've moved my cat out of the way to get a good look at the PPF. everything seems to be there. But when i push up on the transmission everything moves around. The PPF bar is securly mounted from the trans to the rear end but the PPF moves seperatly from the body, I dont know if it is supposed to be independant like that. Either way it slops around alot.

I work at a fabrication shop so rigging something up is no problem. I just dont know what im supposed to be looking at.

more than likey you have a broken motor mount. The motor/trans and dif are connected via the ppf, and will move independent of the body with in the confineds of the rubber mounts. But ck the ppf carefully they are known to crack.

Check your motor mounts and your diff mounts (on top of diff). Those are the only 4 points that bolt the whole drivetrain to the chassis. Also it's not out of the question to see a cracked PPF.

I don't think it is a motor mount. Motor mounts have stainless steel bands to hold them together if/when they break. If your moving the tranny around the PPF is likely broken. Look closely at it right in front of the diff.

Yea.

Mazda Factory Service Manual. Don't bother working on the car without it.

Also, you can't miss the mounts. As RR pointed out, the entire engine/tranny/ppf/diff assembly mounts to the body in just four locations. Two motor mounts and two diff mounts. There are no tranny mounts.

the PPF is slotted for vertical adjustment at the front.

your problem might be as simple as the nuts not being tight enough to secure the up and down adj. crank 125 ft pounds into the front nuts on the PPF and see if that does it. if not you have a cracked PPF.

don't drive the car in this condition unless you want to rip up a driveshaft and go for a very dangerous ride.

BTW, there is a measurement off the flatted area of the aluminum bolt in crossmember to set the driveshaft angle.

Dis dat shyt

Your tanny should be not moving at all. If you search the forums, there are many threads about this.

It is possible that your ppf is cracked. You can reweld it if you have a welder.

You can buy braces that strengthen the tranny and diff if you want.

There are many options, just do some researching.

Ray at Malloy has the shop manual for about $80. The PDF's can get you by, but there's nothing like having the real deal.

I got my FSM off ebay for $35. If you look around you can find them.

The PDFs are great for enlargin a single page, but I prefer to have the FSM on hand so that everything is readily available.
