Just bought a 94 FD - Need reliability parts

Hi,

I just acquired a 94 RX7. Any recommendations on turbo timers, blow off valves, air filters? Any good place to get these parts? Currently, the car comes with 99 spec turbos, RB exhaust, and a down pipe.
BTW, I am looking for the driverside plastic compartment that is in the door panel.

Please let me know. Thanks!!

Newbie

Air filters are not reliability parts.

Turbo timers are not reliability parts.

Blow off valves are not reliaiblity parts.

Almost everyone is looking for the driver door bin. They are very fragile and very expensive from mazda.

They are both gimmick toys for people who don't know any better. Don't waste your money.

click here, scroll down to the second post (by Mahjik) and keep scrolling until you get to the R section and read the links under reliability or reliability mods (i forget which one it is). also, get your coolant changed out, new spark plugs, fuel filter, oil change, etc. all the standard things you'd do when you buy a new car since you can never be 100% when the last time they were done, unless the previous owner kept meticulous records of service. I'm pretty sure that is all covered in the FAQ stuff though

congrats on the purchase. don't do anyting stupid and just go buying things for the sake of buying things. know what you are putting your money into first and make sure it is worth while, not just what your "bros" say is worth getting or cool.

this webpage is a wealth of knowledge and you will learn much if you use it the way it is intended to be used. use the search button alot and try to avoid cocking off to the people who have been here longer (too many people come here thinking they know everything) than you and offer you advice, even if its not what you want to hear and you will find that pretty much everyone will be very open to helping you. check out the subforum for your region (click here for the West RX-7 Forum) and you'll find info on local shops, owners, meetings, etc.

cheers and enjoy the ride.

Who decided that a turbo timer and a BOV wasnt a reliability mod? Number one a BOV helps reduce backlash which puts extra pressure on the motor which is no good. Number two a turbo timer is a great way to add longevity to the turbo which is a major mechanical working part of the motor (no turbo=not running). My suggestions:

BOV : reduces pressure on the motor
Turbo Timer: Allows the turbos enough time to cool properly to increase there life
Downpipe: Greatlly reduces the amount of heat in the engine back
Radiator: Helps keep the coolant cooler which means longer lasting motor since number 1 killer is overheating
Vacuum Hoses: Stock ones get brittle due to heat cuase leaks

The stock BOV is perfectly fine. A turbo timer makes little sense with primarily water cooled turbos, particularly since water temperatures are actually going to climb in an FD idling with no air flowing through the radiator.

no... the stock BOV is plenty adequate... aftermarket ones are just for cosmetic or audible reasons... although they are nice.

and they dont have anything to do with the motor... but the turbos... the backpressure would go back into the compressor housing which causes compressor surge..... compressor surge is techincally OK if u have enough money to change/rebuild the turbo every year.... because not running a BOV increses responce, but not by that much... pro drifters who have enough funds use that method

and also garrett has a new prototype turbo (which i cannot name) that suposedly is not affected by compressor surge... but thats a whole nother story

sorry for jacking thread :]

+1
yup, blow off releases air from coming back onto the turbos, otherwise they turbos would surge. The motor isn't affected directly.

Turbo timer is ok, you don't really need them on water and oil cooled turbos. something to think about is: "don't go driving agressively knowing that you will be turning it off soon" and you should be fine.

As far as the new guy's question, try the 3rd gen for sale section, and
gothamracing.com ebaymotors.com (careful here though), rx7store.net
