Joining the FD world
Hey guys,
I have been lurking for a couple months now, but i can offically join the FD club now. I just got confirmation that i have a JDM FD Type R on the way from japan for me :O
I had been waiting for 2 months for a nice one to pop up. The next month can't pass by any quicker.
I just had one question though. I read that putting an exhaust on a fd without ecu upgrade for the fuel is a really bad idea. This car is coming with a mazdaspeed exhaust on it, and i was wondering if that would be ok to keep on, or should i put it aside for a stock one right now. PFC is in the works, but prob not for a bit, and i don't want to risk the car at all.
First things are going to be change all the fluids in the car, and new spark plugs. Any other recommendations that you guys have that i should do as well?
Im coming from the civic world of tuning, and i know the rx7 is going to be a completely different beast that i am going to have to deal with, but as a car lover, there isn't another car i would want to be driving day in and day out. I'm sure a lot of you can attest to that.
Thanks in advance for anyone that may answer me,

The Civics that you're used to use a MAF (mass air flow meter) to meter the air as it goes through the motor. The FD does not have a MAF and relies on a MAP (Manifold absolute pressure sensor). The FD expects the same amount of air for a given boost. So if you increase VE (volume metric efficency) with an exhaust or and intake, the ECU will not compensate for the increase in air flow (since it doesn't have a sensor to measure air flow, just pressure) and will still flow the same amount of fuel as it did before the intake or exhaust was added. This will cause a lean condition and will overheat and eventually ruin the engine.

so the mazdaspeed should be ok then?

Most owners have had excellent success running the stock ecu and stock map sensor with almost any arrangement of mods, as long as they regulated their boost to 10psi (stock levels). That's the problem with a midpipe - taking out the main cat can result in huge changes in boost.
Afrs are much more sensitive to boost changes. So even with a single catback for a mod, it's very wise to install a boost gauge so you can know exactly when your boost is rising above 10psi. This line of thinking is quite safe for a car with bolt-ons.

New aluminum rad, boost/water temp/ oil temp gauges, new fuel filter, change all fluids should be going on right off the boat lol.
Would a aftermarket knock sensor be any good? I read a couple sites that say to run that, but i haven't read about anyone on here running one.
thanks again - i can't wait. This next month is gonna kill me
Pics as soon as it arrives
this is all i got right now

i pity your wallet...for it will be empty before you know it..both because you cant stop modding and because repairs = $ lol. just take good care of it. the biggest killer is overheating and not enough or bad oil. get rid of the plastic AST asap, and if it hasnt already been done, plan on replacing the stock vacuum liens with silicon. like others have said get a boost gauge, and possibly use 2 MBC's to control your boost istead of the ECU since after enough mods boost will spike since the ecu's map wont match what's you've altered. also the boost will climb too fast for the ecu. there is a godo post by Damien on how to set up 2 MBC's and keep the 10-8-10 boost pattern

welcome aboard and enjoy the upgrades, on my end it took me 3 years to gradually go from a stock twin turbo set up to a 400 HP single turbo set up and I enjoyed every single upgrade, big and small.
I popped my wankel with just an HKS downpipe and Apexi intake. Somehow my FD boosts to 18 psi !!! The first time this happened I cracked an apex seal and it's been parked since. Finally I'm doing a rebuild now though.
when i first got my car it was all stock besides a 3 inch downpipe. i was spiking 15 psi. thing is it never fuel cut. it was just more and more power...i put a stop to it before thigns got bad..too bad the motor blew a few months later anyway
