irratic ignition start cure
Many of you may have experienced the embarrassment of repeatedly turning the ignition key two, three, sometimes four times while a passenger mumbles what a piece of &*$@. How badass is an FD that acts like a pinto starting up? Have no fear there is a cure.
Mazda, like most manufactures have built in a starter interlock switch to disable the starter with the clutch in normal position. Problem is, our $35k cars were built with a Cracker Jack prize for a switch. The switch is a very simple double pole, single slide switch, and can be easily disassembled and cleaned.
That's one cure, but one step further on the road longevity is to trim 1/4" off the end of the 1.5" long actuator pushrod. This would place the contact slider at a different, and less worn location on the slide rails when fully depressed. The reason the slider looses continuity when fully depressed is because the clutch pedal ***** the pushrod at funny angle. This peculiar angle causes the contact rails to wear prematurely. It also acts like a squeegee by pushing all the dirt mixed diastolic grease to the end of the switches range.
That's it, just thought I would share.
If you don't think it's your interlock switch, just try holding the key to the start position and slowly bring your clutch pedal back up a little.
