intermittent - starter won't turn - I may have an answer
My car has been out of service for a year!
I was having an intermittent problem where the car wouldn't start unless I bumped the key several times. The problem was worse in warm weather. In cold weather I rarely had a problem.
Last July (2001) it just quit working and I had to have it hauled back to the house. I fiddled with it a bit but because of my health I was unable to really work on it.
Recently, I got considerably better (good drugs) so I took out the starter and took it to a really good repair shop . . . they've been around for 50 years. The guy tested it on the spot and there was absolutely nothing wrong.
(PLUG: if you live anywhere in N. Metro Atlanta, use Bomber Electric on the Marietta Pkwy in Marietta for any auto electric.)
After that, I bought a wiring diagram manual and set myself to the task of finally finding out what was wrong. Unfortunately, I started at the wrong end thinking it was a bad ignition switch.
I have included a picture. Circled in red is a connector near the battery. There is a black with red stripe wire that is the wire that feeds the starter solenoid. The wire from that connector to solenoid is apparently bad.
I rigged a bypass to the solenoid and the starter works fine now.
A F_CKING 25 cent piece of wire has kept me from driving my passion for more than a year!
So, learn a lesson from me on this. If you experience this problem, before you do anything else, check that you are getting voltage to that connector. If so, you have eliminated everything that could be a problem from the switch to that point.
Then make a jumper with a couple of female spade connectors and a piece of 14 gauge wire and connect from the black/red wire to the solenoid.
Bet 'cha it will solve your problem.
