Interior center console texture
Interior center console texture
Hi all
Planning to replace the center console of my 92 JDM rhd. I realise different series got a different part number prefix for the center piece, ie F100-, F110-, F158-. F176-… Does anyone know if the texture of the center console across different series are the same? In my memory the black are slightly different, ie the spirit R has a more matte black/greyish for the trim piece? I recall for my original center console it had no texture at all, a smooth black piece unlike the textured piece for ac panel and the dash panel.
I ordered a center console piece from auction and realise the leather and trim is way too shinier than my dashboard leather and ac panel. Wonder if its due to the series mismatch.

I dont know how '92 model year cars fit into this, but 1993 cars had smooth, clear coated interior plastics. The clear coating was found to fail and peel, so in 1994-1995 they moved to an integrally textured plastic that was more durable. It sounds like you may have the textured plastic in your car already? I wonder if it was replaced by a former owner?
The change in plastic textures pretty much followed the USDM changes.
1. The shiny black
2. The textured
3. The factory Carbon Fibre look (for the 2001 Type R Bathurst R)
4. The dark grey, soft touch for the Spirit R-look
5. Mazdaspeed catalogue also had the CF textured pieces
There were many part numbers for the top cover of the centre armrest. These followed the many different combination of switches, I believe; The base frame originally came in black plastic, but later switched to the yellowish colour.
New versions of the armrest, HVAC and gauge surround plastics for RHD can still be got comparitively cheaply. The texture seems somewhat different, perhaps because they have sat in storage a long time.
Until at least a few years ago, new LHD pieces could also be bought from Mazda. They seemed to be a new kind of smooth texture that did not quite match the original.
LHD textured pieces are very hard to find (intact).
There are aftermarket CF pieces around and, recently, some 3D printed replacements have started to show up.
