Intake suggestions
Hi all,
Just after some advice / suggestions really if possible. I want to replace my current air intake pipe, which as some might have seen in my previous post, is a bit pointless to say the least. As it stands:
I was having a look round the forum today and come across this:
I take it that the air intake is forced under the carb fibre hood from a induction pipe down in the grill somewhere? (I'm going at the bit on the left)
Are these any good or are they mostly cosmetic?
I suppose the easiest option would be to block where my pipe is coming out of, remove it and feed some intake piping through the front of my Cwest grill?
Can I have some suggestions please (don't ask a lot do I? hehe)
thanks in advance!
Andy

If you plan to do a FMIC don't bother with a cold air box. However, if you are gonna do a stock mount or use your stock IC check out the M2 Intakes.

I have an FMIC and what I did was open the duct on the bottom passenger side of the car and run piping up to the intake pipes and blocked it off, my intake temps are down considerably.

If you are keeping the stock IC for now, there is NO performance reason to buy an intake. Modding the stock box has been proven to be very effective. Do a search under mod* stock box. Look especially for the posts by "adamc" or "zerobanger".

Firstly, Congrats on the sweet looking car.
Second, the intake isn't that bad. Just needs a little um help.
As step 1, you can probably get some hard intake pipes off of ebay cheap to extend the intakes you have on there now further forward.
As step 2, check out this thread about Damian's intake heat shield https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ke+AND+shield. You can make a similar heat shield to this to direct some cold air into the engine.
Voila, you got a solution w/o dishing out more $$ - sorry can't do the pound sterling sign on my keyboard.
Oh, get some new foam **** to replace the stuff that is on there now. The intake really doesn't look all that bad. It looks like an HKS intake which isn't bad. Used to use them for years on my old Turbo IIs with no ill effect. I do prefer K&Ns though.

Don't you have access to those scwheet Gruppe intakes in the UK?
Ac ouple of hardpipes and K&N's will do you the trick - but won't look as pretty as others though...depends on what you want - form over function or vice-versa?
GEB.

thanks very much for your help guys, much appreciated, and special thanks goes to alberto for the compliments about my car
Any recommendations on the intake pipes at all.. knowing my luck I'll buy a load of crap... be good if I knew the type of things to look for
We can get very little for rx7 parts here without paying daft amounts for them. I've given up with importers, cheaper just to get the stuff yerself. Hopefully the rx7store will recognise the increase in rx7 popularity in the uk and see there's a market to be exploited *nudge nudge*

I bought the aluminum pipe kit on ebay from HTran: huybiz@yahoo.com. He doesn't have any up right now. You can also try import_motorsports on ebay, but they seem real slow like. They fucked up my order. I also heard about someone on here getting them from xoxo. Do a search on intake hard pipes and you'll get some hits.
If you are handy, try going to an auto parts store and seeing if you can fit something yourself.

Im going to eliminate my intercooler and run pipes from my turbos to the the intercooler duct. I'll have a heavy duty heat shield to keep heat from the radiator from seeping in. Maybe i can even angle the radiator different. Should be fun.
But yea...you can mod the stock box in like 15 minutes with great results.
Cut a hole in the bottom, get a 2.5 inch heavy duty vinyle hose from home depot, route it from between the radiator and the chassis (where that foamy thingy stuff is) into the bottom of the box.
If you have the money for the m2/rx7fasion box, you will need to mod it to get similar results as with a modded stock box. Just the facts.

Not sure, but I would say yes those pipes would fit the HKS intake just fine.
Adam_c, Zerobanger, Damian or is it DamonB and a few similar threads for someone named max pesce or something have some good info on stock air box mods if you want to go that route and if you can even find one in the UK cheaply.
Depending on your performance goals and your views of the open intake vs. cold air box, you might be interested in using a stock airbox. Which is what the Adam_c and Zerobanger thread is all about. Not sure if you want to do that. I got mine used for like $40 and then did the adam_c mod. I'm not after all out power just efficient reliable power. Plus I get stuck in a lot of slow traffic here in NY.
My car originally had the Blitz SUS intake on the stock plastic intake hoses. I decided against an open intake after reading various forum threads and other magazine articles about the negative effects of hot intake air on HP. Granted our cars do have an intercooler to cool the incoming air after the turbo, many people feel it would be more effective overall to have cold air to begin with. Which kinda makes sense especially considering how inefficient the stock intercooler is. But that also depends on other factors like if you are stuck in a lot of stop and go traffic where there is no air flow through the engine compartment.
In the end, its all a question of how you use the car and the conditions you are stuck driving in. Hope that made sense. Good night.
