I don't understand about the Moo hose. I thought the Moo hose prevented Mooing of the airbox, which you have removed, which I would have thought would prevent any Mooing?

I believe it is the ACV hose which moo's (not the airbox itself). The hose runs to the corner of the stock airbox where it is baffled and vented out the hose that goes nowhere. Without the airbox baffle, other means must be devised to quiet the noise.

I just stuck a small vent filter on mine. The only increased sounds from my intake are that of the air pump, which is minor.

That looks sweet for a DIY. I was gonna go that route, till I found some used ones for a good price. I still have the parts at home for my DIY.

I bought the tubing from a local aircraft supply shop - they're online if you can't find something comparable locally:

On the mooing -

The 'moo' sound comes from the air pump's "waste" air. The air control valve controls where the air pump's air is routed - either port air (to the exhaust manifold), split air (to the main cat) or relief, which is vented back to the airbox. That's basically just extra air from the air pump that the emissions don't need.

Guess what? 2nd gens have basically the same setup - air control valve, etc. But, on a 2nd gen, there's a canister under the passenger side headlight that is an air muffler for the vented extra air from the air pump. The muffler is plumbed in with a LONG piece of ~3/4" rubber tubing, just like the rubber tubing for the 3rd gen BOV, air pump hose, etc.

My plan when I fab up an intake is to incorporate that muffler somewhere to silence the moos. Stay tuned for that one - gotta get the car first .

Anyhow, that air pump muffler is on EVERY 2nd gen, under the passenger side headlight. I bet that 95% of the 2nd gens you see in a junkyard have it still in there, and if you don't want to get your hands dirty, find someone on the forum parting out a 2nd gen and get one from them. Should only be a few bucks - 2nd gen guys don't want 'em!

Dale

Thanks Dale,

I managed to make mine much more tolerable by creating a plug with a 1/4 hole in it. I believe this is similar to what Apexi provides to quiet the hose on their intake.

I put the plug in the return hose and attached a small lawnmower muffler (doesn't look too bad, actually! Nestles in right behind the air pump. I know it sounds like a hack, but it works pretty well!)

Why not just cut the "muffler" out of the stock airbox? If you look closely at the stock airbox, the moo hose doesn't actually vent into the box, there is a seperate chamber in the box that muffles the sound, then discharges the air under the airbox, by the radiator. So you already have the silencer, just use a dremmel and cut it out of the airbox.

I'd like to keep my airbox intact for (God forbid) resale, should that ever be necessary. Also, a hacked up plastic box thing would be hard to conceal without running a mile of hose to it.

I'll try and post some pics of my muffled hose contraption tonight...

So you were able to completely muffle the moo?

No, but now you have to listen for it and know what you're listening for. Before, it was completely obnoxious and embarassing:

"Nice car!... but wtf is that noise?"

(and that is quoting my mother! )
