Intake Duct

Hi,

I'm at school and can't see my FD up close, is there room to fit an intake duct/tube alongside the passenger side oil cooler on an R1 model FD? I was thinking through the plastic insert on the radiator side however maybe that would reduce cooling capability. The red RX7 in part 2 of the revspeed video seems to have a duct on the oil cooler side? any thoughts?

Thanks,

Andrew Wojteczko

Andrew,
There is room for a duct between the radiator and frame on the pass side. The duct can be fabricated from .032" soft aluminum sheet (Ace Hardware) and attached to the bottom of the airbox so that it goes straight down to the above mentioned location. You will have to re-route the expansion/overflow tank hose to go around back edge of new duct. This will add slightly more intake area than the current duct that pulls from intercooler scoop.
I've done this mod and added a K&N Filtercharger to my FD, and still run the stock duct as well.

I am familiar with the radiator duct however would also like to pull fresh air from the front bumper. I would like to leave the stock duct solely for the intercooler, i believe that will improve it's cooling ability and prevent hot air from being sucked back through. I will be constructing my own box using two K&N cone filters(same as pettit filters) but will fully enclose it to ensure air still makes it to the rear of the engine bay to cool turbos. I am not confident the slit between the radiator and frame rail alone will provide enough air, that is why I would also like to run a duct alongside the passenger oil cooler, is there room? Has anyone seen the red FD in the revspeed video?, not the feed version, he has a duct coming out there, not sure what it's for though.

Thanks for the help,
