Installed new engine but have problems, tell me if you can help.
Just got my motor built for my 94 rx7 but I have this weird humm or whistling sound coming from the the bell housing area. Its not a belt or anything because I have used a mic to listen to it in the bell housing area. It's not a metal against metal sound but a whistling noise.I called pettit about cause he built the motor but he didnt really help.Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?
Thanks in advance.

1) Clutch release bearing - makes noise both with clutch in and out but if its new more noise with clutch in. Try pushing clutch slowly in when in neutral and see if there is any change.
2) Dry pilot bearing - shouldn't matter if clutch is in or out, noise should change with RPM.
Don't know of any other possibilities in the bell housing.

The noise gets quieter when the engines revs ans sometimes stops even so maybe its the pilot bearing, where and what is the pilot bearing?
Will it hurt to just drive it and see if it quits on its own cause I really dont wanna have to jerk that tranniout again ya know??

Pilot Bearing
If its the pilot bearing, there is no way to service it without pulling the transmission. The pilot bearing is inserted into the centre of the flywheel and locates or centers the input shaft of the transmission for alignment to the engine. If it is dry it may still last sometime, I can't honestly say what will happen, it has no place to go so I guess it will just make more noise.
If its the release bearing, it will get very noisy to tell you to change it.
You don't have a sound file do you? You said you have a mic on the sound?

No sorry I dont have a file for you,I was just using to tell where it was coming from .So,do you think I should just drive it and see what happens?Like I said the more I drive it the quieter it gets ??
So whatcha think?
So whatcha think?
Call Petit and specifically ask them if they replaced or greased the Pilot bearing? They would know and they would be the best ones to tell you if its ok to leave it be. I would probably wait until the noise increases or changes but like you I would not want to pull the tranny on a whim.
