Injector Question

Got these injectors today and was planning on having them modified out to 1300cc (theyr currently 850cc) by RC Engineering. My question: One has an orange cap and one doesn't. What part is that and is that something can be replaced? If so is that something I should do or is that something a place like RC could take care of?

That thimble is not a replaceable part. However, you may be in luck as RC cuts down an aftermarket version and may be able to replace it. Otherwise, that one is worthless. On the other hand, they recomend only new injectors to be bored out.

I'll give 'em a call about it and see. Is the technical term "thimble"? Also if RC only does new injectors, where is everyone getting their 850s bored at?

Called 'em today. Missing cap isn't a problem. They put on new ones. Also it's 175/ per injector. The lady on the phone said 1300 ccs was the biggest they'd recommend for the 850ccs to be modified.

That cap is just to protect the injector tip.

Yeah, that's what she said. Anyone know of any other injector modification service? I'd love to compare prices.

That is called a pintle cap and it is necessary to properly direct and modify the spray pattern for the specific application.

WARNING:

We and others have attempted to modify injectors to increase flow rate.
In our experience, there is always some downside to doing this. IE: nonlinearity of fuel delivery as duty cycle increases. Depending on the mods the injector might have poor fuel control at low cycle rates or poor fuel control at high cycle rates, or vice versa. The best solution is to buy an injector with the delivery rate you want.
Bosch makes an injector that flows 125 lb hr which is close to 1300 cc's.
I have read many times in these pages about blown up engines after a change to "bored out" injectors. Maybe the injector was not at fault in all these cases.
I guess you pays your money and takes your chances.

But do yourself a favor and buy an unmodified injector designed to flow the rate you want

Also, I would have the flow rate verified after modification by a reliable injector reconditioning shop.
