Can someone who doesn't have final install run their fan flush against the IC and then hold it away form the IC to see if the noise changes? If it does you probably have a more efficient install, but I am curious anyway. Just not quite curious to rip appart my new installation.

sorry - already had mine installed - don't think that is a valid test anyway. The sound will probably change from less resistance regardless.

So I just finish installing my duct and fan. Made a significant difference, in my estimation.

Could be a combination of the duct and fan. So one thing I noticed was that while at idle the fan also pulled air through the IC not covered by the fan. Obviously not as much, but the airflow was clearly noticable.

While driving, my water temp was several degrees cooler + the air intake never exceeded 47 degrees after spirited driving and stop and go traffic.

Fingers can be deceiving. Put a piece of paper across the open core surface, and that flow will likely be reversed. I also have the greddy smic, and intend to do a spal like yours. Had considered just taping a loose sheet of plastic/mylar across that open area behind the intake pipe ... taping it to the tanks. It would puff out when at speed allowing flow, then press back against the core at idle with spal on. also considered a 4" sq radio shack fan inside the duct on that side .... mabe overkill.

Since the Rx7store carries greddy front mounts and M2 smics, wouldn't be nice if they sold greddy stock mounts, and sold a proper duct for it, supplied by the guys that make the M2 ducts? I retro'd a pettit duct, which was a pia, and for $150 would have preferred a proper duct.

kevin - you are correct. It does seem to be sucking air in.. <damn>. .

Still not too bad. 2mph and it would probably switch..

btw, I have my pettit duct fitting almost perfectly - used a small propane torch to reform it..

Hey - I think the fan on or offset form the IC test is valid! Maybe the statement about it being more effecient with less noise is not valid, but I'd still like to know if the noise is reduced.

I'm happy with the setup I have (cooling-wise) just not with the noise. Doesn't sound anything like the stock rad fans. Louder and high pitched.

IC FANS PICS and RESULTS

I have a GReddy SMIC. Surface is 94 sq in.

I bought two SPAL 5.6" fans. 295CFM, 2.5 AMPS.
One pull-type and one push-type. They cover 53% of the IC surface.

I have 6 pics of the install showing it all but can't post them as they are 104-108K bytes. If anyone would like me to e-mail them to you, you can post them. My .JPG reducing program is not working so I can't reduce them.

Here was my first temp test. I gave up on the PFC intake temp numbers. I don't know where that probe is, but seems like when idling it just keeps going up from 23C to 53C not matter whether radiator fans are on or not and IC fans on or not.

It was 60F in my garage. Under hood temps where 110F. I was idling for about 40 minutes doing tests.
When the IC fans are off there is no air coming in the IC duct or coming out after the IC. When the fans are on I can feel air being sucked in and sucked out of the IC. I put a indoor thermometer taped in the intake duct above the radiator. Temps where 110F with fans off. The temps dropped to 70F with the IC fans on. So 70F degrees are being sucked through the IC compared to the 110F degrees with them off. I put me hand after the IC with the fans on and I can feel the air being sucked through is hotter, in other words drawing off some hot air. How much it really reduces the intake temps I do not know.

My install will show I cut up the ducting a little bit to improve air flow. I am using only 3 pins to hold down the two fans, so you don't need to order two install kits if you buy two fans.

Ken - so - do you like it? It feels much different while driving doesn't it?

$105 for two fans seems to be worth it.

I need to drive it on hot summer days to know for sure. It's still relatively cold here(55F degrees).

I'm pretty sure my water injection, IC and IC fans will be up to the task.

Was able to reduce my pic's size.

Heard Japanese models (post 95) addressed the airflow problem partly by modifying the nose to let more air in.

I like the idea of ducting to prevent cross-flow while running.

I like the idea of a cooling fan to prevent heat soak damage to the top of engine components after shutdown.

is it still a good idea to install fans for greddy smic? does anyone still have pictures?
