Thumbs down I'm not worthy to drive an FD3!

On my way to work today...I saw my damn co worker with his Type R on the street...so we ran. I mis shifted from 2nd to 3rd once again (surprise surprise lol)...and so I was in nutural and i pressed the brakes and barely stopped at the light...then i pulled into the pl and heard a lot of sqeeking. The squeeking sound seems to definitely be coming from my belt. What do you guys think? It just happened all of a sudden. Power seems normal, idle is perfect, everything seems right except that squeeking. And it increases as the RPM does...could anybody give me an idea of what it may be? And more importantly...how much? :/

Any help would be appreciated

Could be your air pump failing, too. If the belt attention doesn't fix the problem, try disconnecting the air pump electrical connector (be careful not to break it -- it is likely brittle).

missing 3rd is common

Pettit's short throw shifter claims to get rid of that. I think it has to do with the synchro's but that's just a "guess". When I race, I shift slowly and i'm still faster. If I try to speed shift, i'll miss 3rd.

If you don't know when the belts were last replaced, you might want to change them instead of just tighten them.

If the air pump is failing, the pully stops turning and burns the belt. I don't remember any noise but I did see white smoke similar to a wheel burnout.

Kai,

It's supposed to be easier when you have a short shifter ! Be careful not to miss too often...you can though your 5th gear syncho out...

Like Damian said, look into a torque brace. I was missing 3rd, and just like you I thought that the short shifter was the holy grail. Nope. I thought I was just a pitiful driver, but now I'm convinced it's the motor shifting that's causing the problem. Get a torque brace or some new motor mounts.

Damn, I wish silvr94r2 would get that brace finished.

nah, i don't miss that often and i rarely have a problem with 5th gear. i drive pretty easy when i do as i don't really race anyone on the streets or anything. few people ever challenge me and i'm not particularly comfortable with blazing about in a bright yellow car.

i was aware of the 5th gear synchro problem but i think 3rd gear has given me more problems than 5th gear gas. sometimes it just refuses to go in immediately, grinds, i go "wtf!" and then try again and it slips in. i love short shifters in general. i don't like the ambiguity you sometimes experience in some stock shifters. the wrx i have is pretty decent, has a nice little click/tactile feedback when its properly gated but sometimes i can't get it into first or reverse and its a bit unnerving. if its caused by the motor moving around as skotx said, then that's rather annoying.
