I'm new here guys and need some advice.....

Hello all. I am very new to the RX-7 world. All my life I have owned American cars, and currently own an F-Body. (I'll wait until all of the boo's subside.) Ok.......anyway.....I have to sell my 2000 WS6 Trans Am due to financial reasons and am looking for a "more affordable" car that is just as fun, fast, and get attention. The compliment to you guys is that I am considering an RX-7. I have done a little research on this forum and they seem like they are great cars. I have a few questions however. Before I start the questions, I do not want to hear any newbie jokes, or comments pertaining to me not "appreciating" the RX's, or not knowing SHI* about these cars. I am serious about buying a 3rd Gen RX, and want your honest comments and opinions. OK, here we go...

1) How reliable are the 3rd gens (engine, tranny, etc...)
I notice a lot of 3rd Gen's with over 60k miles have had their engines rebuilt. Is this for performance reasons, or are there many engine problems?

2) What kind of routine maintenance costs are involved?

3) What kind of performance can I expect from a stock 3rd Gen with a 5-speed (Quarter mile time, etc....)

4) How expensive are performance mods? (Just give me a guestimate and some examples of good/effective mods)

5) How much should I expect to spend on a used 93, 94 3rd Gen, 5 speed, 60k miles or so?

That's about it guys. I appreciate any serious replies and like I said, I do not need any disrespect because I am not as knowledgable as most of you. This should be a compliment because I am showing interest in the RX after owning an entirely different type of car.

Thanks

a 3rd generation RX is not for someone on a budget, sorry they just cost alot to maintain and you need someone who knows how to maintain them, not joe shmoe at the local mobil station.

1) How reliable are the 3rd gens (engine, tranny, etc...)

Some people do change over to the 20B(3-rotor) engine from the stock 13B(2-rotor) engine for performance needs. Others replace their engines because it is shot, due to high temperate, seal breakdown, oil leaks, and things of the like..

There are definitely FD's out there with over 120k on the stock engine..

2) What kind of routine maintenance costs are involved?
Routine oil changes at around 1500-2000 miles. And other fluids.

3) What kind of performance can I expect from a stock 3rd Gen with a 5-speed (Quarter mile time, etc....)
The stock car generates about 255 flywheel horsepower, with drive line loss and all..it generates about 225 RWHP. Pretty impressive IMO..

I don't have any quarter mile times, others will provide that.

4) How expensive are performance mods? (Just give me a guestimate and some examples of good/effective mods)
For starters you need to do a few reliability mods if it hasn't bee done already.
  • Boost Gauges - ~$200
  • Water Temp Gauage - ~$150
  • Downpipe - $250
  • Midpipe/high flow cat - $300
  • Intake - $250
  • Catback Exhaust - $650
  • Pullies - $200

and so on and so forth. There is a large number of performance mods for this car so no worries.

5) How much should I expect to spend on a used 93, 94 3rd Gen, 5 speed, 60k miles or so?
There are by far more 93's than either 94's and 95's. There are good amount of 94's and very few 95's..

A 93 in good shape, with decent (65-80k) miles on it without too many mods will run you about $15k+.

A 94 will be about $18-19k similar to the 93.

A 95 will be over $20k..

Also, getting a base, touring, R1, R2 or PEP packages will alter the prices..

This should get you going, do a few searched on this forum and you will get very pointed information about the mods or the models and so on..

You don't need to keep saying that you are complimenting us by considering the RX7..it doesn't mean much to us..
