Blow the doors off only street cars:

Put the fastest track bike up against the fastest 4 wheel race car and you'll see that bikes can only go so far. Bikes are nice, cheap performance though if that's your sort of thing.

great vid

I just find it amusing how time after time, in car vs. bike shootouts replayed in the magazines year after year, the "bad ***" 600 hp+ street cars go home with their tail between their legs, humbled by basically a bone stock Kaw ZX-10 or whatever...a bike ANYONE can buy for $10k

and the bikes get faster and lighter every year, and the tires get grippier....check out the new YZF-R6 for '06....flat out amazing....17.5 redline, 130 hp, and 390 lbs wet I believe

but there is little question something like one of these mega go-karts that has tons of rubber on the road and ultra light weight (as in less that 1000 lbs) is going to stomp a bike, but I don't know too many people driving those on mountain roads.....perhaps that will change at some point

Which is why I said, "only street cars". The fastest race bikes only turn lap times of the lower GT class cars. The higher classes and F1's are many seconds faster. I used Monza as an example for someone last week. The Monza bike record for SBK1000 is 1:47:XXX. The F1 cars were doing 1:21:XXX. The lower class FIA GT cars were doing 1:44:XXX. So when you take the best/fastest on each side (i.e. getting the cars closer to matching the same power/weight ratio), clearly the bikes can't keep up.

Having to shift weight back and forth is not the quickest way around a course.

it's basically all about the contact patch vs. weight....the rider leaning over doesnt have much to do with it....GT cars simply have so much rubber on the road and the weight is far less than a street car

It's about all of it. If you've ever tried to get a car through a chicane having it sway back and forth (without it losing control), then have a stiffer suspension and try it again, you'll notice a huge difference. But yes, without the grip it doesn't matter as that alters your apexs and thus alters your speed around the track.

Either way, bikes can beat up on street cars, but that's about it.

perhaps with the success of the Elise more ultralight cars will get into production....but I doubt it....not with the safety police labeling them as "deathtraps" or whatever

although it's true you would be CRUSHED by one of these 6000 lb SUVs if you're in something like an Elise

I would, but I just wait to see how long it takes you bring up a YZF in every conversation. As for the project, it's on hold until my injury is healed.

Anyone can buy the bike, but not many can ride them near their potential... Cars get an easy upper hand when the operator isn't real skilled on a bike.

[FROM JOHN'S WIFE] -- If I wasn't so secure in my relationship with my husband, I think I would be jealous of his relationship with his fd.

He actually did have a daily driver -- my old Acura Integra. But then it got stolen (because John put really cool wheels on it) and it wound up stripped in San Leandro. The car just wasn't the same afterwards, and so we sold it.

And so now, I am definitely tired of him borrowing my G35. It's the first car I've ever owned that I LOVE driving. So please encourage him to get into the garage to fix his car!

To the MRS (John's Wife),
There was a six month period when I was forced to take the stinky metro bus to work and back. I hated it but I couldn't take advantage of my wife's time and vehicle. I would suggest you force John to take the stinky bus. BTW, make sure to tell the John to leave the window down at all time because bus riders really smells bad. (Sorry John, but love has nothing to do with your wife's car)
Nice chatting with you (MRS),
Q

PS...Hey wait a minute MRS, you can't use John's account to chat with us. Get your own account lady! And what's up with all the hearts. I thought this is a place for us real tough men to chat. What's up? Take off that dress John.

I tried throwing the car around corners full throttle that would have an FD tail happy and it did not want to break loose, although that may have been due to the traction control? My impressions were that the FD feels like a smaller car than it is and feels so nimble and the feeling of speed is always there, like you are driving something thats a pure sports car, the acceleration felt more rapid as well. The 350Z felt slower in every aspect but more heavy, more predictable, and definitely more forgiving. I felt like I could do no wrong with the car, which is a change from the FD, which has scared me on a few occasions.

I've also had the chance to ride in a friend's Comptech supercharged NSX, and I don't know if its because I was in the passenger seat, but it still just felt slower and less exciting than driving an FD. A stock one felt even more sluggish, but for some reason I was expecting this car to blow my hair back, which it didn't.

All in all, and I am far from being a head in the clouds FD lover that doesn't see the car's faults, I would still prefer having a FD over both a 350 or NSX for the fun factor alone.
NSX is a slow car, and the 350Z's not far behind. You might as well get a CIVIC because there are no difference in performance. Every time I get into my twin turbo FD, I feel like I just came back from the dead. I love that car.

PS...Don't tell my wife guys. She's extremely jealous. In fact, she's trying to get me to sell my FD.

To John's Wife,

My wife feels the same way. Luckily for me she's good about it.
Every man needs their own little escape, hobby, toy call it what you will. For many of us, it is this car.

If you were closer, John, I'd come over and help you out.

Happy holidays all.

But then again, I'm sure you guys get plenty of business doing the Lexus 30k/60k maintenance and oil changes.

The only things we ever did were 15k/30k, oil changes, brakes, timing belts and the occasional recall. And once you think you have a real problem, you just go to the computer and search the service bulletins. 9/10 times your problems are solved. It gets boring after a while. I needed a more rewarding and challenging job and left after a year.

FD mechanics never get bored

there is always fresh new hell to contend with in the bowels of the FD engine bay

a good reason to scrap as much superfluous crap as possible, and another reason I went non-sequential
