ignition question

Hey guys, I found out that the trailing coil on my second rotor is out. My question is this... how will this affect the performance of my 7?

I have heard two sides of this. I have heard from a couple people that the trailing coils really don't affect performance much. I heard that they were their to scavenge what was left after the leading coils fire.

Then I went to Mazdatrix today and the guy behind the counter said that my car would barely run if a trailing coil wasn't working (which would explain how rough my car has been bucking/hesitating lately). The part costs about $130 there, and I don't mind paying if it will help my car better. Do these coils go out often? And is it hard to replace?

Thanks in advance!

Bry

how do you know it went bad, what kind of test did you do to determine that?

Well, I changed my plugs about a year ago... and when I just changed them again recently... all of them had significant wear on the electrode except for this one particular trailing plug on the second rotor. It was practically brand new. I change the wires everytime I change the plugs... so it isn't the wires. And when I replaced the plugs this time (and also bought some Racing Beat Ultra wires) I decided to ground the plug against the chassis. NO SPARK! I tried it with the other trailing and leading and got a spark... then tried that 2nd rotor trailing again against the chassis. and once again... no spark... I'm sure this is not the proper way to check the coil... but I still think this indicates a bad coil. Just wondering how it would affect the performance of my car...

First things first. make ure you plug wire is seated well on the coil. then make sure the harnes is plugged in. then make ure the ignitor is plugged in. then test the coil for continuity. then test your leading coil for continuity between the coil post. if you have a bubble on the sides of any of the coils, then you have a bad coil.

Thanks for the info... I will check connections tomorrow. Just out of curiousity though... what are the symptoms of a bad trailing coil? And if it does need to be replaced... how extensive will it be to get to it?

Did you end up changing the coils? If so, how much were your coils?
