Im looking in the $30k range for a replacement car, and the choices are as follows:

1) 2000 540i 6spd with DINAN upgrades
2) 2000-2001 Audi S4
3) 2001 Corvette Z06
4) 1999-2001 BMW M Coupe (stiffest chassis BMW ever made with a nice, upgradeable engine)
5) High mileage E46 M3

Which car do you think would be closest to the FD in terms of all-out, no compromise performance? The way im looking at it, is the M Coupe and the Z06 fall into that category...but the Z is a LARGE car, and the M Coupe is just kind of...blah. Then the others fall into the sport sedan/coupe category: give up some speed, but gain a lot of reliability and practicality.

I need some outside opinions on this one....post what you would purchase to replace your FD and why. AND if you think it would be worth it to drop in all new stuff into the FD (or swap a LS1 in), why would that be the route to go?

Stuck right on the middle of the fence here....

Zach,

This is an old thread.. I skipped over the pages 2-13.
Im curious. what did you end up doing? Or are you even
still around.

IMO: I would keep the FD, take your time to fix what ever maybe wrong.
And get yourself a nice regular car. Like a 325i or 330i 4door or coupe.

From the choices you made.. Sounds like you really want a German car.
Like I did.. I have done extensive research on German makers.. and
this is what i found out:

2000 540i Six speed, If you are gonna get a 540i, you might as well
get an automatic. But if you like the slush box, look for some
good shape CPO Warranty/Maintence M5's. With the new E60 M5's
about to his North America. Many folks are selling theirs, relatively
inexpensive.. But I would look for a 01-03. here is a link that may help
you:

As far as Audi's go.. Don't do it.. Maybe the biggest mistake of your life.
If you think your FD had issues. YOu haven't seen anything. If you get
the wrong Audi, kiss your money and time good bye. To many
Lemon Audi's out there, from the S4, RS4, A4 A6 and etc.
From what I seen, Audi dealerships fixing Audi problems are worse
or the same as Mazda dealership tring to fix an FD. Are you catching
my drift?? Not only that, Audi's are kinda looked uppon as a glorified
VW, in the eyes of other German car owners. Audi's have decent
interiors, but thats about it. They get no respect and are poorly engineered.

2001 Z06.. Can't beat the performance value.
But its still " domestic ".. And Vettes are Dime a dozen.
Just make sure the piston rings were replaced and not
consuming to much oil if not. Nothing that a healthy FD couldn't
run with. IMO I would try to find a C6. The C5 aged like 20 years
when the C6's hit the market.

Mcoupe, Nice car.. very good handler, roadcourse car. But its
small. You might as well keep the FD.. and New motor??
Do you realize how much BMW Engines cost?? Its ridiculously expensive.
If you did all that. You might as well put it in your FD, and run circles
around it.

E46 M3.. Just make sure you do your home work. I forget what build dates
are. But BMW recalled all E46 M3's that falls on certain build dates
for Rod Bearing failure. Which could
lead to engine failure. Granted BMW recalled them and fixed them and slapped
on a 6 year 100K mile engine warranty after the FIX.. Never the less
many are concerned that their resale values are hurt, because essentially
the engine is rebuilt after the fix.. Unless you can find one with a new Motor.

You can find alot of info on www.e46fanatics.com and www.bimmerforums.com

if I was you.. I would build a bad *** FD and get a 4 door bimmer for the leasure
stuff..

when you buy any high priced performance cars.. Just make sure you
do your homework. Check their service history, see if service was done
at dealerships or independent, Carfax of course.. and last but not least.
Get the car with the Extended Warranty, manufactorer or 3rd party.

with the car choices you made.. I think I know where you are at.
Having owned Domestic cars and mainly Japanese vehicles.
You just want a " German " flavor. And yes there is a difference.

Goodluck and keep the FD. Remember FD is more exclusive than
all of the above..
