Idle suddenly got stuck at 3000 - 3500 RPMs!!!

I was cruising on the freeway, not beating on the car when all of the sudden the RPM's (between shift or in neutral) jumped up to 3000 - 3500RPMs with my foot off the pedal.

When I put it in 5th gear and slowly depressed the pedal I heard some popping sound as if something was backfiring.

There was hardly any boost building up.

Vacuum reads normal.

Nothing appeared on my knock readings, so I doubt that I detonated the engine ( I know how a blown engine behaves).

I managed to limp it home while using the brakes to slow the car down since the RPMs wanted to stay at the 3k - 3.5k range.

When I parked it in the garage and open the hood there was nothing apparent that might have caused this problem.

What should I look for?

lol not really funny but check the screw on the front of the TB... that might have worked its way down keeping the Throttle open a bit... had that happen to me, but mine was stuck at 5K....

Next thing just check over vac lines, you could have a HUGE vac leak....

if the screw has worked itself down, pulling up on the pedal wont do anything.

unplug your ISC solenoid. Its under the double throttle on the UIM. This was faulty on my car (i.e. stuck open) and caused my idle to soar when an electrical load was present (a/c, lights). If that isnt the case id go with checking the throttle cable, screw, or the TB itself

I think you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere.

I did the mod of removing the warm-up butter flies a year ago.

Ever since I did that mod I noticed that the idle went from 750RPM to 1200RPM.

Do u think that there might be some sort of correlation to what just happened?

OK, I just found out the problem.

It turns out that the screw fell out in the tap for the warm-up butterflies mod.

I like to thank each and every one of u for taking the time to burn-off some calories on the keyboard.
