Idle/stall problem with stock RX-7
I appreciate any advice you experts can offer about this problem...
I have a 1994 RX-7 with 57K miles. It is all stock, except for a downpipe.
Sometimes when the car is idling, the engine speed suddenly drops. It typically recovers quickly and then drops again. It does this repeatedly for a few seconds, bouncing between about 800 and about 400 rpm. Then it either settles back to a normal idle or stalls, unless I throttle up to about 1500. It usually stabilizes when I give it a little gas, but occasionally it just starts bouncing between two higher speeds (1500 and about 1000-1200).
This problem typically occurs when I am stopped at a light. It rarely occurs when I am approaching a stop with the transmission in neutral. Three or four months ago, this problem occurred about once in fifty stops. It has gradually increased in frequency and now occurs about once in two stops. Some days are better than others.
Otherwise, the car performs great.
This car is from California, and the check engine light comes on about once every two months, indicating Code 16 - EGR Function Sensor. Could an EGR valve stuck in the open position possibly cause this problem? Perhaps it is the idle air control valve? The hoses appear to be in very good condition, and I am reluctant to replace a bunch of vacuum hoses unless it is truly necessary. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks for your time.

this is definetly a problem with your EGR valve being stuck open. You can take it off and wash i with brake cleaner or something alike, or you can replace it.
I've had 2 mazdas and had this problem on both of them, I took the EGR valve off and cleaned it with WD40 and put it back on, and it fixed the problem on both cars and its still good after a year.
before reading the last paragraph of your post, I was thinking "thats sounds familiar, I bet it's a damn EGR valve"
basically, the cause of the problem is that when your engine idles, you get almost as much exaust gas as air in the combustion chamber, which makes the explosion very weak, or not happen at all.
