Idle problems

My idle will not keep steady. It is not really rough but every time I stop it is at a different rpm. I think it is a mechanical problem and not a vacuum leak. But I am not sure. I am pretty sure that my throttle cable is all tore up. Has any one had this problem?

My car has and idle problem as well. Except yours sounds a lot better than mine. My car whenever I put the car in neutral and come to a complete stop the car will shake really bad and begin to die out. Sometimes if i'm at a light long enough it will stall out. And if i do stop and it doesn't want to die out it will idle at or right under 1000rpm, but if i turn the wheel.. the power used for the power steering will make it start to drop in rpm then die. I wish i knew what was wrong here

does the idle change when under electrical load? What RPM range are we talking about?

More info..

It could be a gasket leak.

It usaully idles at 1100rpm with 18lbs of vacuum, or if I give it a little gas the idle will drop to 600 rpm with about 8lbs of vacuum. I know when you take off your air pump it will have a rough idle, but it does not see the same. If I have been running it hard like after a race the idle is really rough then catches itself and raises to 1100rpm. I am not sure

Mine started this weekend after I installed my M2 Med SMIC wrong. I had the IC pipe rubbing against the air pump pulley. I was a dumbass a nd I tried to force the SMIC to fit with the RE Amemiya Intake. I think I might have knocked my Airpump pulley out of alignment, thus creating additional resistance to the engine causing the idle issues.

I am having similar problems. When I idle, it is very rough. For instance, if I get stuck in stop and go traffic, it is likely that after several stop and go segments, I am having to restart my car again because the idle fails and the car dies. It is becoming more and more annoying, any suggestions? Any recommendations on a good rotory mechanic in St. Louis, MO?

If the car is dying it is most likely that it is you alternator. My did that for awhile too. It had a blown circuit in the alt.. It is cheap to fix. But I think mine is a mechanical problem. I just can not find it.

1. Could be the clutch switch. You can get a new one for $50. 2. Engine wear, how many miles on your engine?

46,800 miles on the engine...no mods.

Could it be the fuel filter?

Let me give you another circumstance when the problem occurs...when I back out of a parking space, I am going in reverse, when I put it in first to go forward, the car will die. When the car dies, the idle becomes very rough and bounces between 0 and 500 RPM's, then it just goes to zero RPM's and dies.

Too bad when you do a search, you have to search thru all the threads that have everyone saying "do a search!"

I'm right outside STL. Maybe we can hook up and check this out together... mine idles strange too... But only when NO electrical load is placed...If I have everything off...IE: fans, lights, etc... it idles REALLY low... But if I turn on the parking lights... she idles fine... TPS you think?

no, i definitely dont think its TPS. if your tps is out of whack, the ecu makes adjustments to the tps readings itself, and causes the car to idle at extremely high rpms (1600-2500rpms).

Well?

CAn it be the fuel filter or injectors causing this rough idle?
