Ideas how to create adaptive driving aids with a 5-speed
I nor has anyone here ever proposed this question:
I am disabled, paralyzed from the waist down from a motorcycle accident 7 yrs ago. I have been forced to drive an automatic due to the lack of interest i suppose on creating an adaptive driving kit for a manual transmission. My FD is my first sports car since the injury and i was in love from day one.
As you all know, there is a lot of power potential to be had. I also know things have changed in recent years regaurding/understanding the limits of an auto tranny. I think i want the feel of the 5-speed again. Anyways thinking of doing a auto to manual swap in the next year or so.
I am posting here in the 3rd gen forum because this kit would have to fit with my car therefore be 3rd gen specific. Also i figured the rotary family is more creatively inclined than most other car owners.
Im thinking a accelerator ring with the steering wheel, a right handed brake hand control, and some neumatic clutch engaging button placed on the shifter itself perhaps. IDK
If some of you guys have any ideas as to how to go about creating such a kit i would love to hear it.

I think an actual hydraulic clutch with an h-pattern trans in your case seems impossible to reinvent for your situation.
My suggestion if you really want to keep the fd and have almost as fun as a manual is install a sequential gearbox. Then if you want, install paddle shifters on the steering wheel..or keep the shifter at the tranny tunnel whichever.
That seems more realistic than trying to rig up something to work with your situation.
Either way good luck man.

Sorry about the accident. I been in a few and I got friends who are disabled because of them as well. For example I know a girl who is missing a leg but she still rides her bike everyday.
To answer your question I got a few ideas of the years.
Clutch can be done fairly easy actually. There are tons of jeep guys who move their clutch to the stick itself. they will use a hydro clutch to a perch and use a motorcycle lever upside down on the lever so you can use your right hand for shifting and clutch properties, or they will use a simple cable clutch to a bicycle lever doing the same thing. throttle and brake can be handled in the same maor as you currently use.
I hopethat helps

I thought there were 1 or 2 others that have added driving aids to the car as well similar to what you described. I'm sure you'll be able to find what you need here. Good luck on building a truely unique car for yourself. I'd really like to see how it turns out. When you finish, post up a build thread!

There are kits out there but they cost well over $3,000
heres an example of how it could work
Clutch:
http://disableddrivingdevices.com/in...=39&Itemid=116
Gas:
http://disableddrivingdevices.com/in...=34&Itemid=120
brakes:
http://disableddrivingdevices.com/in...=37&Itemid=119
I am now wondering if you guys could think of a way to replicate these type of devices without the cost or come up with something totally original and simple
thanks for the feedback and i would for sure post a build thread
