Do alot of research before you buy the 3rd gen. I've been on the forum for about a year and i'm still learning things everyday; i get my FD in about a week and a half. Wish me luck.

The biggest thing that the more exp people here are trying to get through to you HS kids, is that the car is way out of your ability to drive. I don't care how you can do this or that, the FD is not like other cars. Its not forgiveing if you push it hard, cause it will break and or you will wreck it. This car will scoot, and before you know it the back end will be where your front one was. If your single, you need to make at least 30k+ a year with no other bills. And if your married, I feel sorry for you, cause you'll never afford the upkeep on the car.

Im also looking into a 1993 supra tt but i really want the rx-7 are they really as hard as evreyone says to maintain.
Good luck with the supra, as for the rx7 just spend it on a low milage rx7 with the stock motor.

Hold out a little while longer and save up a little more money. Then pick up a twin turbo or non turbo supra.Much more reliable car.I was actually going to get a supra instead of a 3rd gen rx7.Im still in debate on whether I made the right choice.

I see a bunch of neglected ones...
Not sure if the owners are lazy and don't care or they can't afford to keep it in top shape

Eventhough we are "HS kids" that doesn't mean that some of us "don't have the ability" to drive the car. You just have to be smart about when to open it up, and be ready to say no when you have a friend in the car saying "Lets see what this thing can do," on a busy street. Like I said before I had mine for seven months and I had no problems because I'm responsible and smart. It's a really fun car to drive. I had three people film me while I was driving on the highway and I don't know how many "hell yeahs" at the stop light. In fact, on the highway a couple girls flashed me (that was a good day!) I always say "Don't make a mistake unless you can pay for it."

Well I guess I will jump in on this one. I drive a 94 Fd.. I got a good deal on it to 15k and it was a single turbo td06 , full exhaust , intake , pwr radiator , BRAND NEW MOTOR WITH WARRANTY , apexi power fc and commander . So far I have spent ummm about 300 bux to keep it up. I just had it tuned and it runs better then I could dream. Yes this car does although scare the **** outta me. I do drive it very slowly and cautisiouly and have yet to push it to its limits b/c I think its important to learn about the car then to fully just WOT it. Currently I am learning just to get shifting down and finding out where the car likes its rpms and so forth. If you do decide to get a fd invest in a daily driver. I did on my camry and its good stuff. All I really can say is its a task not for the faint of heart. I think the max I ever got was 135 (haha ya laugh but hell its better safe then DEAD). Gl to you and please drive safe (yes also to those who dont believe me I drive the speed limit lol 5th gear crusing at 60 ask anyone who knows me )

Good idea...

16yr olds cannot afford insurance and an fd. Why does a thread like this turn out too be 3 pages long. This thread makes the 7 community look as bad as you do.

If it was put together and tuned correctly than yeah. If you have a happy motor, than you'll be happy

If you want a rx-7, great!! its an awesome car. Feel free to stick around and ask questions and learn about it but dont buy one just yet. I worked my way up in HP to my FD and know how to handle it. Even if its for 2 years, buy a less horsepower car and learn how to drive on it and then upgrade to the FD, it will help you out.
First Car: '89 honda accord 120hp
Second: '94 honda prelude 160hp (destroyed by a joyriding kid)
Third: '95 BMW 325 180hp
Fourth: '94 3000GT base 222hp
Fifth: '95 RX7 270hp (as is now)
you dont have to go through as many as I did but it helps to learn and build up.

Edit: If you first car is a FD, save a little money and invest in a performance dirving school, it will be alot of fun and they will teach you how to drive your car safely and well...my friend's first car was a Supra TT and that was his parents major request.

I recently sold my single turbo supra, and my fast car addiction sure hasn't left me so I've been considering an FD. I've been doing the research about maintenance, and they really just seems to be common sense things that need to be done to keep the car running properly. Maybe I'm missing something here, but imo any high performance sports car is going to have to be upkept properly or else you risk engine failure. It just seems that most engines were blown because of lack of knowledge and running on the edge of engine safety.

Maybe I'm just very optimistic because the 2jz was happy running 500hp daily and regular 150mph runs, but I still don't see why maintaining an FD would be so much more expensive, especially if you do all of the work yourself as I would on any of my sports cars...to hell with trusting some shop!

Alosardo, true...alot of stuff can be attributed to human error but it is also true that turbocharged rotarys have alot shorter lifespan than piston driven engines. One of the biggest things you have to watch out with the 3rd Gen is boost spike/boost creep because if you get too much air in your engine and not enough fuel, hello popcorn. It can be a great car but it will cost alot of money to build it up right and ALOT of homework. As for someone else, the only thing I would suggest is that if you are not an expert on fuel mapping and ECU tuning, pay someone who is to do that because it is like working with high explosives.

Sad but true, this is currently a "project car" between my dad and I paying 50/50 and it still makes me broke because if its not the problems the dam thing INHALES gas like its in a beer chugging contest. My insurance luckily is reasonable at around $150 a month, so in that aspect im lucky.

neither can 17-18yr olds. Sad this forum is made up of people who can't afford proper insurance, So they get insured illegally under their parents names as secondary drivers. I'm glad my parents are alot smarter than yours.
