I think it is time I sell my FD
 

I want to hang onto it, but I am getting married, my convertible is running but I don't feel good driving it (or the FD) long distance because of parts availability issues, and I just picked up a rod knock on my BMW so I will be replacing it soon. So I thought I would post here to see what the thoughts are regarding sale price... So, at this time I am just curious to see what you all thought I might be able to get for it.

Some details.

  • 1994 Touring
  • 127,000 miles (the tach, odo did not work for a while and was swapped in and out. Currently it works but the mileage display is sporadic)

  • purchased as crash rebuild 20+ years ago
  • alignment
    • although aligned, the left front bearing has needed replacing every 6-7 years or so.
    • The right front strut is bent at the bottom to help it align. car does not wander or dogtrack.
    • Nor has it had any other alignment or control issues for the 21 or so years I have owned it
  • currently the master and booster need replacing and I cannot find them
    • this is the prime reason I consider selling it, but maybe this will motivate me to go ahead and get it sorted out and then keep it
  • needs a new oil pressure sender
  • may need rebuild (or not) I go though about a quart every (guestimate) 250 miles
  • front left fender lip trimmed to accommodate larger than stock tires.
  • When I take it out, it get a bit too much attention and everyone wants to race me.

  • PF01 17x9(?) front
  • PF01 18x10 rear
  • Sumitomo Tires.
  • Profec B (needs repair or replace) I just drove the car most of the time with the boost at "off" level and only occasionally turned it on for fun, I think in this is only produces 7 lbs. of boost. Yesterday, I saw another one on the road in Columbia SC, it was the first "other" FD I have seen in about ten years.
  • It loves driving the dragon with me.

I may be mis-remembering some details, but they are written up here on this site so it can be checked.

If there is any way you can convince yourself to keep it, I would. These cars are getting harder and harder to come by, and I know I have serious regret over several cars I've sold in the past that i know i cannot replace.

Yours looks to be in pretty good shape, and if you sorted out the couple of cons you've listed, I'd strongly suggest you find a way to keep it.

Maybe get a compression test done on the engine to see what shape its in. That might be a determinant factor if you keep, or sell, and will give you some more data on the oil consumption concern.

Thanks, I already tested the engine. It was 110, 110, 105. or something very similar.

I would fix it and keep it. Being a salvage title hurts the value a lot. Might as well hold it till even salvage values are high.

Did the repairer say this back in the day? Assuming strut = shock, it plays no part in alignment. Outboard of that, the upright/knuckle would take a fair old amount to purposely bend...... with an oxy.

Clutch master should be just a simple reline with a kit put through it, be way under $100 even here. If a genuine 15/16" master is hard to come by new, the 1" one should be still out there?

Salvage title NSX just pulled almost every bit as much as a clean title on BaT. Just some food for thought. GL - hope you can keep it.

That is not the case for an FD yet. Supra and NSX pricing are in a different league. That's why I suggested waiting.

In the end, everything ends up belonging to someone else anyway.

OP, you need to ask yourself: is this car enhancing my life or becoming a burden? If you get rid of it, are you getting rid of it because you are ready or because you feel pressure to? Will there be a feeling of loss when it's gone, or a feeling of relief?

The big question is, what do you want to get out of it?

Would help if you elaborate on this but i've rebuilt my master cause of most common issue where internal valve gets stuck (pedal goes very soft half way then like hitting rock...). It was easy job and zero dollars, didn't even need any seals, just clean and reinstall.
For booster, it could be a check valve for the vac line, check if booster works on idle.
In any case, keep an eye on market place and parts will show up.
I would personally not sell it for just this reason...

You can send the brake booster out to be rebuilt. I'm a 1st gen guy and that's what we have to do. But for my '85 I can buy brake and clutch master cylinders no problem. RockAuto, Mazdatrix, etc etc carry them.

*EDIT - just looked and nobody has brake master cylinders for you FD guys, just rebuild kits. I'm very surprised. But regardless, if you want to keep your rare and classic sports car legend, rebuilding a master (and sending the booster out) is a fairly cheap investment. If you want to sell it there are many, many people looking for one.

Being 77 years young, I never had a mid life crisis moment. Because I have always been a sports car person from my first car (57 TR3) until I die.
If my wife and I could only afford a single car, then it was a sports sedan or coupe.
Then when things improved, the wife would have her family car and I would have my car.
I never gave up the dream and challenge.

If you do not mind, I would like to seek some wisdom from you.

I was just thinking that I'll keep my car even after they make it illegal, like in The Last Chase (1981) or Death Race 2000.

I am just getting around to checking the rebuild of the master (didn't have time - or inclination during the winter).

Unfortunately, I cannot find a shop that will rebuild the booster.
Sometime later this week, I will get back to the master and look over the rebuild I did in the fall to see if there is a problem I caused.

I'm 79.5 YO, and I'm still racing my F2000. Even so, getting the FD out for a spirited drive still turns me on.

It is a clean title - no "brands." When I saw that it had been crashed, I took it to the dealership to be inspected, the mechanic (someone I trusted) said it was put back together very well.

These readings were on both front and rear.

I understand and agree, but being married now the car doesn't get any of my time.

Now 81.5, and nothing's changed except my age!

People have been asking for more pictures... so, I uncovered the car for the first time in two years... as usual, when the interior is not had a change to breathe, it gets kinda funky in there, but nothing a rag and a little soapy water can't fix. But the exterior, uncovering that gives me feeling that I haven't felt in a long time. The convertible makes me want to keep and work on it whenever I wash it down. But with the FD, it doesn't even have to be clean to invoke those same feelings.

Interior, except for the shifter knob and boost gauge, the appearance is completely stock.
Engine/Drivetrain except for the two three items mentioned (1) downpipe, (2) y-pipe, and (3) aluminum AST, the engine bay is completely stock.
Exterior except for turn signals and R1 lip are completely stock.

I'm in the same boat as you with looking to sell the FD. In my case, I have a wife going through cancer and a number of medical issues myself that prevent me from enjoying the car at all. Sometimes you just know when it's best to move on. Good luck on your sale.
