I think I'm about be get shafted. Does this sound right?

I just got off the phone with Lowe's Performance in Sarasota, FL.

My 5th gear syncro finally snapped, and I took it to Lowe's to get fixed. I also brought them a brand new ACT street/strip clutch kit for them to put in while the tranny was off.

I just got a call, and they told me it's ready, but they said the total cost for the syncro + labor comes to $882!!!

They said it was a little more than expected because they decided to replaced the seals between the tranny and motor since the seals "...harden and leak on almost all 3rd gens they have seen..." (even though my FD has 30k miles on it...does this need to be done this soon?)

Does this sound like I am getting screwed on the price?

I did a search before I took the car in, and I was told the average price on this was like $500.

I am going to pick up the car within 20 mins, so a quick reply is appreciated! Thanks guys!

you should have gotten an estimate on the price so you would know...always ask before hand and get it written and signed!!

Any way that doesn't sound TOO bad. I know pettit charges like 350 for the 5th gear synchro I can't imagine clutch would be that hard. If the guy is nice maybe you can tell him you think it's a little extreme and work it out. If he is an *** just don't ever go there again. I have heard good things about that shop though a couple times but I don't know for sure.

Nice car.
Good luck

Well, you got to pay what you got to pay, I guess. However, do not lose your reciept and ask them what their warranty is on that SOB. So if in fact they did not replace the seals and those end up going bad in the near future, you can jam that recpt. down their throat.

If that is Mike Lowe, drag racer (1st gen), I would tend to believe him.

Unless something has changed there recently, I believe that he has a good reputation.

I have many Florida friends that have used him exclusively.

Good Luck with it.

Labor to pull and replace a tranny is at least $400. The seal is pretty easy to do when the tranny is out, so they probably are not charging much for that. The synchro......I don't know.

I don't think you are getting screwed.

Most places charge about $450-500 parts/labor on the 5th gear synchro, figure in an extra hour or two for the clutch and seals and your still only at $650 tops. What's his hourly rate for labor? Does he charge straight hours or did he pull the labor time out a book? Is it possible he sent the tranny out to a 3rd party for the sychro?
