I need info on buying an Rx-7 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking at getting a 1993+ Rx-7. I've heard all the good things about rotary engines. How eficient(sp?) they are and how much power they can give.
But I've also heard the bad news. It's alot of $$$ to get one fixed and they break easily. Is any of this true? I want one soooo bad, but being in college, I don't want an unreliable car.
And just so you know. This car will be modded. I would like to beat the domestic crap around my town.
Hear are my questions:
- What are some things that I should look for in order to buy one
that is in good shape?
- Is the '93 Rx-7 known for a sticky 5th gear?
- What are average 1/4 mile times in the car?
- What is a better choice? R1, R2, or a R3?
- How dependable are they? Does it cost alot of money to
maintain them?
- Should I avoid the ones that have replaced motors in them?
Well those are most of the ones that I can think of right now. Is there anything you guys could think of that I might need to know about?
Please help me out. Thanks.

The link above can answer your questions.
R1 was 1993
R2 was 1994
1/4 mile times have been listed anywhere from 13.1 - 13.9 (from what I've seen printed.
NOT a car to have if you are concerned about daily reliability ESPECIALLY if you don't have back up cash to fix things.
My opinion anyway...
Good luck and be sure to do the research before jumping into anything

I'LL SECOND THAT WEBSITE!!!!
That's where I got all of my info before buying one. Absolutely do not buy one that doesn't pass those perameters expressed on the web site. You will get burned!!
These are awsome cars and I will never sell mine and will probably look for another low mile 95' when I get out of school in 4-5 years. Nevertheless if you are not willin to invest the blood, sweat, and tears(when it is broke), Oh yeah and big on the MONEY!!! Then don't buy one. Also buy a cheap beater to drive if it does break.

Both these guys said good stuff. Personally I prefer the touring model because I like leather plus these cars get so hot inside I don't know how the r1 or r2 guys survive w/o the moonroof. Plus if you drive with the ac on all the time the car is slower and also gets like 3 miles a gallon. I think the main things you have to look for when trying to buy one is problems with the turbos and with the apex seals. I've heard of people using a temporary boost gauge to see whats going on. 10-8-10 boost pattern. also a compression test to see if the engine is still good. Another thing you could do is jack the car up and get under there. If you see lots of oil-stay away. Thats what happened to me. oil leaks everywhere including the turbos which is really a bad sign. Also the best thing you can possibly do is buy a really cheap beater. It keeps the miles way down on the rx. when you do drive the rx you appreciate it way more and also when you are having work done or the car is broken you have something to fall back on.
