I may be the proud owner of an CYM R1 Friday!!!

There is a 50-something business man in the area who is selling his CYM R1. Only problem, some guy already put money down on it before I could call. Hopefully he won't go through with the deal, because the guys said I would have next dibs. He is asking $15,900. He is the original owner. 49K miles. My chances aren't great because my supposedly the guy who's buying it drives a Porsche Therefore, this kind of money could be chump change....Oh well can only hope....

Thanks. I'm really pissed, because I called him right after I saw the listing in the paper, but he doesn't have voicemail and wasn't home. I didn't call back until he already had the deposit! ARGGHH

Well, just got back. At first glance, the car is impeccable. Body is nearly perfect along with the paint; however, the car has lived on the beach its entire life and oxidation on the wheels, brakes, suspension, exhaust, and throughout the engine compartment concerns me. Interior is also perfect. The owner is a 60-year old oriental man. He has taken impeccable care of the car and is very careful, but the oxidation is pretty bad. I did get to drive it - my first FD drive - and it was pretty amazing! I'm just concerned that i'll pay $15,999 for it now, and then have to spend thousands fixing all the rusted parts. Someone is driving 3 hours to come look at it tomorrow. If it doesn't sell this weekend, I'll take it to my Mazda mechanic and have him put it up on the lift and check everything out. Any advice here guys???

Really disappointed....

Alan

Well, the oxidation is why the car is selling for such a low price. I wouldn't necessarily be dissapointed. It doesn't sound like the oxidation is so bad that a few grand won fix it up (replacing the entire exhaust etc...). You could still end up paying much less for a CYM R1 w/ 49k on it than most people. If this guy took such good care of the looks of the car, it's likely that he took good care of the engine (outside of the rust which he really can't control). I think you should go for this one... Good luck.

Just make sure the son of bitch has good compression and boosts properly. Oxidation seems to be petty against these factors.

Good-luck!

I don't know if I'd be so upset about it. Many of these parts are easy to come by if you want stock, since so many drivers replace their exhaust and other stuff. You could drive it around and keep an eye out for good deals on used parts. Not only that, people are selling off of parts cars all the time. I'm sure it's disappointing because we always envision the car as impeccable, but I honestly think it may be cheaper to replace exhaust components than interior and engine parts.

Exhaust is no big deal. I would end up getting full exhaust anyways. Complete brakes are $800 on RX7.com. Nice new wheels like $1200? It's the suspension and other things that are rusted that worry me...

pianoprodigy...Don't buy it. Although I think I saw it on 19 & Gandy today. CYM, old fogie driving, no sunroof, foglights. Looked nice from the outside.
A car from the beach is just like a car from up north driven in the snow & road salt. I say hold out for the car you really want.

Personally, I would jump on it as long as the compression's good and it boosts good. A CYM with 49k miles for 15k is a steel. Plus you already know you won't have problems with the paint, and the 50 y/o guy probably hasn't been ******* the car too badly either. I say go for it.
