I have been watching the market casually for a few years and closely for a ~5 months. It seems like cars that used to sell for $15K are sitting for $11K. I am seeing alot more cars advertised for under $10K recently.

Do you guys think this is all the economy? Or is part of it due to coming into winter? Or??? It seems like you can buy a lot more used car for $15K due to the economy and maybe that is driving down prices?

I'd say its the economy... Just before I picked up the R1 I sold my Stage II WRX for 13.5 when a year prior I could have easily gotten 16k for it.

After 5 years of searching I found mine on Autotrader.com advertised for $17k with a new rebuilt Pineapple Racing engine and both new turbos. Haggled the guy down to $13k. When I went down to see Rob, at Pineapple Racing, he told me they guy had put more than $8500 into the car within the last year. Not the cheapest but given the previous owners investment I'd say I got a great deal.

well i bought my fd in june 09 for 7500 with the driver quarter needing repair-dumb owner tried drifting by curbs and ditches... ne ways running strong with 105k when i bought it think is around 112k or little less now. Still need to do body work...has had some b4 the inside of driver door is red but over all nice car. Interior in great shape, everything work until i broke a few things-window switch and door lid...figures. O and had one bent rx7 rim-for sale btw(set) so i got rims 4 my bday in august then i cracked one-not repairable on the 10th of nov....ug just spent another 1200 on new rims/tire...now it wont start just turns over....so not sound as good of a deal as others but i think i was for my area...plus my issues were due to me not the car failing...will not sure on starting thing yet...

My FD is a 1992 JDM Touring-X model, with 66,000 original kms on the engine and body. It is of course right hand drive. It also has the oem Mazda body kit on it, and the body and interior are 9/10.

After replacing all the vacuum lines, replacing the air pump and 02 sensor, and a lot of cracked couplings and misc maintenance parts the engine is now running great.

I bought it as-is and have been able to get it plated and insured for about 6k Canadian all in.

Paid $13,700. '93, w/12427 original 2nd owner miles. As stock as can be. Interior in 10 star shape, exterior 8. Auto tranny but the car was well preserved. A little dirty with some minor needed TLC. It's only gonna take (hopefully) a small investment to get it to where I want it to be, but that's a lot better to me than the "ultra" cheap ones that take thousands to get road-worthy.

Okay so I was an idiot when I bought mine. The interior needed some work, and the hood had a small dent (hail or something) car had about 85K (Im sure its got the original motor, but did have new turbos). I paid 13K for the car it came with a 3 year 36K mile warranty. I replaced alot of the interior with brand new parts from Ray crow. the inside and outside of my FD is near flawless with exception of the front bumper... (took out a sign). The car has around 92K on it now, this was a year ago and is running strong as ****. I have put a good deal, close to 5K into the car for performance/safety/replaced parts. I should have looked around more, but at the time and about 3 months leading up to finding this car I had only seen 4 others for sale and they where between 16-32K.

I paid $14k for mine, about 6 years ago. It had a fresh rebuild, and some PFS upgrade parts on it. I'd say it was good deal.

Buddy of mine is a one owner. Bought his off the lot in '93 in the $40k range. Sounds like a good deal. LOL.

I don't have a 'cheap find' story, but rather an 'easy find.' I laid down some pretty picky standards and prepared myself to be without a toy for at least a good 6 months before I could find one I wanted. Had to be a '94+, had to be without a sunroof, had to be pretty close to stock, no montego, white, or silver, had to be fairly low miles, but most importantly, had to be as clean as can be, in and out. I started a thread with those criteria, and within 1-2 hours, I got my first reply, and the poster's car ended up surpassing my expectations in terms of cleanliness and low miles, and was the one I ended up buying.

Couldn't believe how quickly I found what I wanted.

My car was up for sell for $11,000 and the guy was getting married and was strapped for cash. I ended up getting it for $7500...

I hear the only way to make money of these cars are stripping them and selling them peace by peace.

Same here. This was the only car I've ever really wanted. Picked up a roller last month for 4500. It needs a buttload of work, but it will be exactly how I imagined it.

wow... what a bump.
I picked up my first FD from a commercial airline pilot who never drove it. 93 VR touring with some paint fade and 83k, paid 11k.
The second one I overpaid for a buggy 93 bb r1, but it was exactly what I wanted and had a pretty good list of mods already on it.

Paid $500 for my parts car. Had sat behind a shop for almost 10yrs and had been partially covered. Outside was pretty thrashed. Interior was mint black and had a reman engine in it with < 20k miles according to noted build DJSeven.

Might be the only time an FD has been a good investment...haha.

Yea, the deal you picked up on that parts car even makes me a little jealous.

It is a lot easier to find FDs for a "good deal" these days but it is a lot harder to find one that is of decent quality.

Bought my FD from a guy in Ohio, trailered it back with my Nissan Pathfinder which blew a head gasket on the way home. Drove 45 MPH from Cincinnati to Hudson, WI. a One day trip turned into 3 days.

Paid 3500$ for a bone stock 1993 VR Touring Automatic "Not running." All it needed was a coil pack for 60 bucks. So I guess I paid 3560 for my FD?

In the process of converting it to a manual, total cost is 270 bucks for every part. Got a single turbo "kit" pieced together for 500, which included a Turbo, Manifold, AI kit, downpipe, FMIC for 250 with all piping 150 for pulley kit and BOV. 500 for PFC. 1300cc injectors for 150, milling work on the rail was done my be, and all fab work was done by me. so another 1320? and I have a single turbo manual FD with a good amount of the supporting mods?

Total price is then ~4860.

I wish that price also included all the random **** that goes into the car that you "didn't need." Fuel hosing, trans hosing (for the AT) 300 dollar PFC adapter for the AT, Gauges + Pods 300. WBO2 150, Datalogit 250. Good thing it doesn't need a rebuild soon, oh wait. Yes it does.

God I shouldn't write this all down

Even with all of this said and done though, I'll never sell the car if it is within my power. I love it so fracking much.

This next winter I will hopefully be saving my pennies for a full rebuild + ALS Seals and porting. Poly Motor mounts, diff cradle brace, "newish" wiring harness, bigger fuel pump, and I'd like to redo the interior into black, but with brand new leather (new car smell), an actual tune job, maybe a bigger turbo, greedy elbow or some elbow with AI injection ports, and paint.

This list is never ending. The crazy things you do for love

i bought my 93 FD for $4,000 in Japan. Everything worked great, no mechanical issues. The only thing it needed was a new paint job...which i ended getting a nice black with a little silver for $400.

but the prices are cheaper in Japan. =)

So, I just bought mine in late November. Got a call from a friend who works the auto auctions. He said he had just bought one for his lot, but thought it was a little high priced. I told him I'd come check it out. I about **** when I saw it, then I really **** when he told me what he though was " a bit high priced" $6500 later and she's mine. New Mazda reman, new turbos, and so so so so clean. Needed no work. I think I scored...

I bought a MR2 Turbo for relatively cheap, simply because it had a 3rd gen 3sgte swap and therefore was one of the fast MR2's in my area at the time, for $6500 (This was cheap at the time in 06, same car would go for $4500 in 2011 as 3rd gen 3sgte swaps are quite common for them now)

With maintenance to have a not very reliable, and crappy looking car, wound up costing me around 20k ontop of what I bought it for.

I learned though, never buy a import on the cheap, and never buy one without proper financial wealth backing it up. Hence why Ive gotten into investing so I can afford a nice version of an FD or MR2 Turbo, rather than trying to score a derelict one on the *cheap*
